Audio for DSLR

I want to buy the NTG-2 kit from B&H; http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/421940-REG/Rode__NTG_2_Shotgun_Microphone.html#specifications

But, I use a DSLR camera.
I want to use the H4n, and record straight into that, but money is an issue.

Are there any other cheaper solutions?

None worth having. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. IMHO even using a pocket recorder like the H4n is getting pretty marginal. The NTG-1 or -2 is a good mic but about the minimum recorder I'd consider for serious sync sound work is the Tascam HD-P2.

Check out THIS kit with the NTG-2 from DVeStore. And if you order, tell them you're a DVXUser member.

A little less expensive than the Tascam HD-P2 is the Fostex FR2-LE, but it's also a very solid performer.

What I'm asking is how do I capture that audio? Not a syncing audio issue.

I was thinking of getting the H4n, but I am strict on budget. I may not be able to afford it.

What I wanted to know is, what can I use instead of the H4n that would be cheaper, if anything? The Tascam HD-P2 is even more expensive than the H4n, so that's out of the question.
The only thing I can think of is buy a cable to connect the mic to the camera, but I don't want to do that. It would be the cheapest solution, but will not give me good audio.

I'm not looking to go out fully professional, but something that I can keep and with. If I were to be doing something professional, I would get proper audio; either rent, or hire someone, but this is not the case.

The H4n, FR2-LE, HD-P2m and PMD-661 et. al. are the cheap solutions. Anything less creates more problems than it solves.

As for good reliable recorders that are cheaper than the H4n with xlr inputs I can't think of any. That is as good as it gets for the money as you have been able to discover for yourself. The Tascam is around $1000. Don't skimp on your audio, bad audio makes a bad movie.

One of the wyrd phenomenon I've noticed about the Zoom H4 or H4n, is that when I go to Amazon.com I see the H4n for about $299 (ad also says discounted from 600 or so) And here are a few other packages offered for a few bux more....

Then I go to ebay, and almost all the offerings that are 'auctions', seem to run up to about 200-250... and the bidding starts almost as soon as the item is listed... sellers of course like that... but for the buyer, waiting for the last moment usually gives a lower price... at least how e-bay works...

Now, personally I don't buy 'used' equipment for more than half price and it has to look absolutely pristine even then... something more like a 1/4 or 1/3 is more what I expect out of used (even 'once' by a little old lady for sunday school choir capture...)

Even the Zoom H4 is no 'bargan' as well, at least relative to e-bay... And need I mention it... when I check 'craiglook.com' which searches all the craigslisting, none of those are really bargans, and almost always out of my area of personal pickup (about the only way I think I'd pick up something like this...)
