Audio for 5D

We are thinking of getting the Zoom H4n to capture audio for some shots we need to use our 5D because of its stealthiness in a crowded area. Are people using the Zoom for narrative projects and able to match the audio to other pro recorders?
If so, what does your setup consist of?

i put a mixer in front of mine and its amazing. done a couple of things without a mixer, but i've got the h4, not the N. and its OK too. preamps are a bit noisy, but thats what the upgraded N improved.

Interesting this Zoom H4n ... and cheap
But is there any micro you can use WITH the canon.
I understood this one you have to mix the sound afterwards in post pro

I need a zoom mic for interviewing people in the street as well (in Tokyo!)

Check out this clip from a project I directed. We shot three cameras and recorded the sound with one Zoom H4N.

I would definitely recommend this set up. You have a lot of recording options with the H4N. The drift was not that noticeable and we were shooting 14+ minutes at a time.

Syncing was fairly easy by using the waveforms in post. It was easy to drop the WAV audio file and go.

In terms of stealthiness, you could totally have the H4N in your back pocket with a wireless receiver. That's what I did in the above clip.

Yeah we are going to go with this setup for these crowded club scenes where the director wants to shoot in a working club on the Jersey shore. Its going to be crazy trying to do scenes with a bunch of drunk people around us but...

I use the H4n with the 5d and I would also recommend the setup. You have to sync the audio in post, but the setup gives you much more flexibility during production vs having the mic tethered to the camera.

Shooting in working clubs worked for "Swingers." It think you'll have fun pulling it off. Drunk people won't matter and could actually add to the scene if your actors plan off their environment. You should have at least two cameras rolling so you can cover each actor at the same time. Three cameras if you can get them. Mic your two actors with wireless mics and plug the receivers into the two XLR inputs of the H4N. Doesn't sound like there will be a video village, but there is a headphone output from the H4N that your director can use to listen. Too bad you're not local. It would be fun to help out.

It's crazy how awesome that looks and how easy of a set up and delivery that probably was. Was the client stoked?

With the Zoom H4N, can you split the audio to record an external mic on one channel and internal mic(s) on the other channel?

Yes, it's a "true" 4 track recorder.

Does anyone or has anyone found the need for the remote control (reduce handling noise) or is the rubber casing decent enough to eliminate the need? $30 seems like a bargain for the remote control if this is an issue.

Thanks! I'm picking one up this weekend
