Audio equip for music, workable with film?

Hi all,

I've been doing music junk for a long while now, and have a lot of leftover equipment from that lifetime. Does recording hardware for recording music, usable for film work? Like for example, does a 8 track (Fostex 8 track) work well enough for film sound recording use?

Or does it not capture voice dialog well enough as it is more specialized towards music recording?

XLR required?

A search would help... we just had this discussion last night.

But "junk"? Doesn't make it sound like you're too serious!

A lot of audio gear you've used to record music might well be usable in film work, but it's going to be a piece-by-piece question. Some will suitable for one thing, like on-set, and others will be suited for others, like VO, foley, scoring, ADR etc. You'll almost certainly be lacking some things that are pretty specifically designed for filmmaking, like shotgun mics, wireless lavs etc.

Is the Fostex an analog reel to reel 8 track or a digital Adat-compatible unit? The latter might have some usefulness, but the former is less likely to except *maybe* for some light music scoring duties.

So, like, it depends...

Ah I see. Well the Fostex is a digital unit with flash memory. So I'm figuring it should be ok.

How about like a compressor effect that is used for vocal singing to even out the variations of volume in someone's voice? Probably workable for dialogue I'm hoping. I'm afraid the attentuation on the voice at different levels may sound noticeable.

Depending on what your doing almost everything can be used for film sound. You don't sound like your too familiar with the tools you have so how well you can use them for filmmaking may have a lot to do with how well you learn to use them. You "flash recorder" I suspect is recording in some compressed format and that would make it of limited use for production, maybe useful for FX recording. But a lot also depends on exactly what you are working on. The higher the level the higher the expectations. Compressors can do a lot of things if set up properly. Using them to "even out the levels" would not be a good use in most circumstances.

What is it exactly that you want to do?

The fostex might be useful, but location audio gear is pretty different than music gear, much less music junk. Where's Oleg, he sells used gear.

Ty Ford
