Audio during firewire transfer

So, I've started two threads several weeks ago involving a saga of transferring tapes from one miniDV tape to another, to rid myself of a timecode problem. My director was wondering, if I play a tape on my Panasonic Handycam, which was recorded on a DVX100a, and I transfer it via firewire to a deck, where it is rerecorded, is there any way (excluding technical malfunction) that there would be a loss of audio quality? He seems to think there are audio levels the DVX100 can record that a lower quality camera like mine could not play back. I'd like to reassure him.

Thanks,

JC

No truth to that. It executes an exact digital data transfer of what got recorded, at the exact same quality.

Now, if you're talking about playing the footage back "live", then yes there's a possibility that you won't hear anywhere near the quality that got recorded; but for firewire transfer it's either exactly the same or it's broken. There is no room for variable quality levels.

Barry,
Thank you for extremely quick and helpful response. Forgive my ignorance, but what do you mean playing the footage back "live?" Our current transfer method does involve playing the tape on the video camera while simultaneously recording to the deck, using firewire. Is that considered live?

Again, thanks to you and all the other helpful members of this board,

JC

If you listen to the camera speaker or the analog out of the cheaper camera the quality might not all be there. Firewire is digital so it will transfer the full quality tha was recorded.
