Audio channels

I see two options for recording sound with an external mic: 1) mic plugged into "input 1" and the "Channel 1 Select" set to "Input 1" and 2) mic plugged into "input 2" and the "Channel 1 Select" and "Channel 2 Select" set to "Input 2."
With the first option only one of the audio recording level monitors is activated, with the second option both monitors are activated and you get a louder sound during play back. So.. do I record sound on one or two channels?? I am totally confused by this. Thanks.

If you have only one sound source (a shotgun mic, for instance), then try setting both channels to Input 2, which receives the mic input. Then set the gain of one channel a bit lower than the other one. This gives you a sort of "exposure bracketing" for sound, meaning if one channel clips, the other one with lower gain will serve as a backup.

Note that the gain controls are active even in the ALC (auto-gain) mode, so this will work for ALC.

So, in reality, I only need to record to one channel? I was wondering if by recording in two channels you get a stereo sound that you wouldn't get with only Channel 1 activiated.

By "gain" do you mean the audio level? Or the gain you use for dark lighting conditions? Thanks.

Each channel is really a separate audio track. What Anindya is saying is you are going to use the same source for both channels, but one will be set at the right levels, other one a little less - just in case you spike or distort. Its not stereo - its 2 mono tracks - 1 recorded on the L and 1 recorded on the R track.

When your editing, set your normal channel as your audio for both R and L - if you need to use the lower recorded one, you can replace the 'normal' channel with the lower recorded audio. (Dont use both, just 1 or the other)

You may not need it - but if you are only recording 1 source, there is no reason why you shouldn't do this, its a great way to have a backup.
