Audio Bags

Hello!

I'm looking for a decent bag to house my R-44, Mixer (MixPre, maybe 302 later) batteries, 2 receivers, cans etc. I found this bag and I wonder if anyone has it:

Petrol PSDMB-302 Audio Mixer Bag 139.95
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/340291-REG/Petrol_PSDMB_302_PSDMB_302_Audio_Mixer_Bag.html

It doesn't specifically list that there's room for a recorder like an R-44 or R-4 pro, but I think I see an SD recorder in the photos. That's why I want a real person to confirm. I may have a decent gig next week out of the area, so I have to get on this. Luckily I have enough saved for my R-44 with an Oade Bros mod. Anyway I want a decent bag to house everything because I'll be walking around in the forest and I want one bag. It doesn't seem like there are a lot of bags in this price/size range, so this one needs to work. Anyone have it? Anyone have something comparable?

There is also this cooler looking one, but I don't think it's available yet:

Petrol PS607 Deca Mixer Bag 144.95

Thanks for the help!

I use the Petrol bag, PSDMB-302, with a 302 and a 744t. If that helps. I don't know the size of the R-44 so can't say if it would work for that recorder.

Thanks for the help!

I have the PS607 which houses my 302 and an FR-2LE (sometimes a 744t if I get a gig that needs it.) I think the two bags are the same dimensions-wise just the Deca mixer bag is Petrol's new version in all black. The FR-2LE is not as deep as the R-44 but the R-44 is a lot less wider than the FR-2LE. Anyone else have the R-44 in Petrol's mixer bag?

I carry the np-1 battery in the small space that goes next to your body, behind the two main parts of the bag. The battery does not fit in all the way, about a third of it sticks out. It's not a problem. In the small pouch on the front i keep the BDS and there is some room left but I don't keep much in there, sometimes a spare wireless or something like that. Of course the wireless receivers go in the external pouches.
I like the bag with this setup as it is small and lightweight. If i need a bigger setup then I go to a 552 in a bigger bag.

All I can say is Petrol.

Well that and I bought a Porta Brace for my mixer & recorder because that's what the gear I was renting came wrapped in. I hate it. (At the very least, I dislike it vehemently.) Worst thing about it, all the zipper and metal bits - really ridiculous for a "sound bag" to be so noisy.

BTW, I have a 442/552 Portabrace Mixer & RM2 setup for sale with the full body harness and belt.

Yeah, Petrol. ;)

Chad,

With all those buttons on top of the R-44, you may have a problem with any mixer bag. If your buttons are sticky to press or recessed it may work. Petrol has a nice interior suspension system which will help with the top buttons.

I have one of the Petrol Eargonizer bags which is the predecessor model and it is very good quality. What you won't like is the hokey-pokey clear vinyl cover over the top.

You may want to check the 4.1" interior width dimension which may be a little tight. They used to build the eargonizer in, I think, three sizes. I have the middle size one and it has plenty of space.

Don't they have a picture of a Cantar-X in one of the eargonizer's on their site? I'm just asking, because I recall seeing it in a bag that could be "opened up" so that you had access to all the controls on top of the recorder. But I could very well be mistaken.

Now wouldn't that be fun? Petrol bag and a Cantar? ;)

I am a bit fan of Portabrace, I just got one AO-1X from trewaudio for my SD302, it's a bit bigger, (should put my 442 in) but it's kind of spacious, so... you don't have to worry about lacking of space, but 302 is half way short than the bag, so... I use vecol to position it...but leaves buttom empty, but I can run cables under.

Before I bought the bag, I did lots of research on the bag, I think the petrol one is really designed for the SD 302,

AND there is another one that KATA produced, also good with 302, it;s like perfectly fit, with one front pocket for two wireless... check it out on their website, it's called Koala 4, also there is an Koala 3 as a second hand using in trewaudio with harness..which is kind of worth to buy I guess.

Cheers

Good luck for finding the right bag.

The R-44 is fairly small, though it may be a bit thicker than the SD recorder shown in the photo. I'm not worried about the top of the R-44, as once it's set up all you need is the front panel to record or change levels. And right now I'm using the MixPre (not the 302) mixer. So I think I'm good. I have looked at that larger PEGZ-2 Petrol bag, and it looks nice: http://www.petrolbags.com/PEGZ-2 But that's more than I need now, and I want to be light and mobile. I guess I'll just call B&H and see if they can confirm my size requirements. I also looked at the KATA, as I have some of their bags, but they only have a larger model that is in the 250.00 range. Christ, my incredibly large One Man Band (OMB-75) bag at 220.00 or so costs less than their little mixer bag, and it fits my EX1, mics, wireless, books laptop etc. I actually fit my 11 year old niece in the bag!

I just don't see any smaller bags to compare to the Petrol PSDMB-302.

Just for fun, here is my KATA OMB-75 featured in a video I made for a contest. I won a Sony EX1 with this vid!

i've got the pegz 2 and i love it. i've got it setup in 3 rows: psc mixer, fr2le and wireless/np1s. my cans, tx's, coiled xlr jumper and lav pouches go in the middle zipper pocket with memory cards, batteries, pen, paper, etc in the front pocket. yeah it is kinda big but i didn't want to have to buy another bag again after outgrowing it(i dream of a fusion in the near future...). i use the petrol harness with it and i can do a 10 hour day no problem, even with a bad back.

Watch out with B&H and some of there KATA bags. I order this setup from B&H back in August:

I fought them for a month about when my Koala-4 would come in and they said not till the middle of September. It's now October and it's still not available! The other Koala bags might be in stock, but I opted for the Deca mixer bag and used the extra cash to get my FR-2LE. When my setup gets big enough, I'd love to get the PEGZ-2. Looks like an awesome bag!

PEGZ2 is what I mostly use.

SD mixer
SD recorder
Lectro wireless sitting horizontally, up to 6 with np1s in the same row.

If you mount your lectros vertically it would be quite a squeeze, but I can fit 8 Lectros for the 788T/'CL8 jobs.

I have the PSDMB-302 and it's treated me well. I once shoved a Tascam DR-680 in it (a 7.95 x 2.12 x 6.93" recorder) with a Lectro SRa, two 100 Series receivers and a BDS system, and it all fit. It was snug, but doable. I think you'll be able to make it work with the R-44.

I would also strongly recommend the shoulder harness. When I put my kit together I tried to buy the smallest/lightest gear possible. It's not fun to spend $100 on a set of dorky backpack straps, but it's worth every penny.

I'm thinking about bumping up to a 552 soon, and the PS605 Deca Eargonizer is looking like a nice bag for it:

I kinda like those straps on the front for storing your pole. It'd be nice to have another option of where to put the pole when you don't need to use it for a few.

Thanks Sam
I was thinking of writing you and asking about space because I recognize the bag in your B&H vid.

At 6.2 x 7.25 x 2.4", the R-44 just may work! So even with a little bag like this, you like to use the harness? Is over-the-shoulder a pain? I'll probably get one, but it's too late for my gig. I just wish they had the Deca bags available now... I want one. They look really nice. I was thinking the small one would do me. http://www.petrolbags.com/Sound-Bags?q=node/1180

I like that they also act like a regular bag you carry with handles. I sometimes do live music videography gigs where I bring a 4-track recorder, and if I could just plop down a Deca bag and plug-in that would be sweet.

I have the 302 Petrol bag and use the R-44 and an SQN-4-like mixer plus NP1-battery and 1-2 wireless. All fits in there nicely. What I usually do is I put the R-44 in the front pouch and the mixer sits behind in the main pouch, as you will usually tweak a lot on the mixer and just press record and stop here and then on the R-44. Since you use a MixPre yo'll even have more space.

My body just doesn't hold up very well when I strap weight to it that isn't evenly distributed. That's why I own a courier bag and a backpack for everyday life. If I need to leave my apartment with more than just a couple pounds of stuff, I use the two-strap backpack.

I think you'll be okay just using the included shoulder strap for jobs. What makes the harness worth it is that you know for certain that you aren't going to screw up your back.

I'm on the fence about the "doctor bag handles" on the new Petrol bags. I bet the handles are nice when you need to transport it, but they look like they'll get in the way when you're working, which is not a good trade off in my book.
