Audio and Video out of sync!!

Hi,

I'm editing a feature film shot on 2 DVX100p's using 24pA and I'm cutting on FCP 4.1.1

After using the suggested settings for capture, sequence, etc ... I'm experiencing slight but signifigant audio and video syncing issues, in that they're slightly out of sync. On the timeline, everything visually looks fine, but there is a slight delay. Id this a known issue and how can I fix it? I already copied the suggested DVX100 file from the FCP4 install DVD from the Extras folder and put it into my FCP plugins folder, saw that I had a new audio option under the tools menu in FCP and left the default of '2'

Also, I'm listening to the audio from my G5 and viewing the footage from my cinema display, although I'm using a 13" tv as an additional monitor, so you can't say, well, that's because you're viewing from a tv or well, it's because the audio is going through a mixer and I've introduced other components that could be the problem. I'm listening and viewing from the source.

Thanks,
-Matt

Re: Audio and Video out of sync!!

I couldn't tell you why your footage is out of sync, but I can tell you how to sync them up in FCP. :)

All you have to do is select a clip in the timeline, click on the little chain icon to unlink the audio and video from each other, and nudge the audio into sync.

Sounds like a hassle, and I'm sure there's a way to capture or work with DVX footage so it's in sync from the get-go, but at least this is a workable solution until you find a more permanent one. :)

Re: Audio and Video out of sync!!

www.adamwilt.com has the answer as to the why. It is two frames out of sync. So just bump your audio two frames in front of your footage, clip and trim it to fit again, then re-lock it.

That's what I've been doing and it seems to work... and yes.. it is a pain in the butt.

The above site says that the 'A' doesn't have this sync 'feature'.

Re: Audio and Video out of sync!!

So, ok, I understand that the audio and video are slightly out of sync when having the 24pA workflow, and that DVX-100 Audio Sync Tool file inserted into my FCP plugins folder is supossed to correct the problem, but when I go to the tools option in FCP to correct the sync, the new audio sync option is greyed out, I can't get to it (yes, my clip is highlighted both the audio and video). And, would I apply the default sync fix of 2 frames to every single clip individually? That will take eons as I'm editing a feature film with multiple sequences with hundreds of clips.

Is there a "how to" for this specific issue? I've looked, and I can't find one.

Re: Audio and Video out of sync!!

doubleclick your clip to bring it up in your viewer window on the left..... THEN try to use the sync tool under "tools".... and yes, apply that to each clip individually...

Well, I'm not sure this is meaningful... I'm not running on a fast, sleek G5, and it's clear that audio/video sync (and even playback frame rate) varies when playing back on the computer monitor/audio. What works best for me is always output through firewire to an external monitor/sound system; this provides a steady framerate and "locked" DV a/v sync.

Re: Audio and Video out of sync!!

On the FCP 4 cd in the extras folder, there is a dvx100 script item that has something to do with this sync issue, although I have not used it or know where to put it, or use it. Anyone out there know what I am talking about? Maybe that will fix your issue when you capture.
