ATOMOS SHOGUN | Will it be compatible with the FS700??????

When I was there I got the feeling that like the rest of their recorders, the SHOGUN will not do anything unique other than the A7S. Again due to licensing and processing power of the recorder.

So far the Odyssey 7Q is the only one with that much multi-use functionality.

They'll need a licence from Sony to do it. However CD may have an exclusivity deal with Sony for recording the FS700 RAW.
There was a video (from NAB, I think) where Juan from Sony said that they had offered the possibility to record the FS700 raw to several manufacturers, and it didn't sound like they were limiting it at all.
I'll be damned if I can't find that video again...
here it is (at about 5:40)

I'm waiting before buying something else. An insider said this recently: We haven't yet released our official compatibilities with the product, but the FS700 is a likely candidate.

I don't know if they'd have access to the Sony Raw from the FS700, I imagine they'd be shouting it from the rooftops if they knew they had a good chance of recording it. 4K ProRes - maybe. I bought my FS700R for the raw and 4K2HD via the 7Q, so I'm not easily swayed from it. The Shogun is 2200AUD vs 2800AUD for the O7Q though, that combined with off the shelf SSD usage and no licence fees could make for an attractive package for FS700 shooters not interested in Raw capture though.

It's wild guess but I cannot imagine that Atomos will handle 4K from a Sony FS700. The Atomos devices (up to now) capture what has been internally encoded and convert these files into ProRes. The Atomos Blade is able to capture 10bit but as the FS700 supplies only 8Bit at SDI it's still an 8bit stream in a 10bit wrapper. They capture with their recorders from the cameras "as it is" with all internal settings. The ProRes files of a Samurai Blade has very very little difference compared to internally recorded AVCHD.

The process of capturing 4K from a FS700 is much more complicated. Convergent Design for sure will confirm this. The FS700 supplies 4K via SDI as Sony's proprietary data stream which is made for Sony's RAW recorder. The encoding has to be done in the recorder. That's what the HXR-IFR5 / AXS-R5 combo does and that's what the 7Q does also on a different route.

Atomos claims that the shogun will record also RAW but if your read the brochure in detail you will see that they don't mention a camera brand or type but only 4K (3840x2160) ProRes and cinema DNG. For my understanding it's the 4K stream over HDMI to the shogun or a recording of cinema DNG RAW via SDI. To record 4K from a Sony FS700 Atomos would have to go a similar way as Convergent Design in licensing from Sony the proprietary data stream and convert it on the fly to a data format for the NLE. I don't think it will come. First of all you see when you look at convergent design that it's a long and complicated way, secondly the FS700 will run out sooner or later and thirdly the market is already covered by the 7Q.

For my understanding it will be a recorder for GH4, A7s and upcoming similar 4K cameras. And maybe also for cameras like the Blackmagic URSA and AJA CION.

That would be my expectation, too.

Of course, the Atomos Shogun will be able to record HDMI or SDI output from Sony FS700. But that will be 8-Bit HD only. The only way, a Sony FS700 is able to export a 4K signal is using the proprietary Sony RAW path. We should be happy that Convergent Design got a license to decode that, the Sony solution is much more expensive and a piece of crap for run & gun operations.

If you are not willing to pay for premium products, the industry always will give you a second class specification. From my perspective, the O7Q is priced too cheap. If they would have added 200 to 300 US$, they might have been able to implement HDMI 2.0 instead of HDMI 1.4 e.g. and could have hired more Engineering capacities, bringing more functions within short time. Companies need a fair amount of money to develop and manufacture tools, that keep our business running. If the Atomos Shogun costs less than an Odyssee7Q, I would not wonder about disadvantages.

If you wait two or three more years, 4K workflows will be more common and we can expect many more interesting products, some will offer cheaper paths. The FS700 is an early bird and it's way of outputting 4K is already quite outdated.

i'm start working for them to test their gear includes Shogun for up coming event (can't tell the detail now, sorry!) and hope i will share whatever the information i can put here. hope it does help you guys.

BTW, at the interview above, i really liked that Jeremy talked about the cost of the storage. that low cost HDD for the studio/indoor recording, it's very nice :) wish 7Q has same kinda idea for the cheaper/longer recording.

speaking of the 7Q, now it has everything we need for FS700. that wonderful product made the life of the legacy 8bit AVCHD camera so called FS700 so much longer.

so if you need that function, just grab one of them now. because Shogun and FS700raw, no one knows what's gonna happen right now, there is zero guarantee.
