Atomos Shogun vs O7Q?

Just wondering what you guys think about the Atomos Shogun? OK, it's not out yet but based on the specs they've released. Of course, the question is will it ship v1 with all that is promised or like the O7Q, will it ship at v0.3 ;) Support for all the ProRes flavours and DNxHD is nice.

As far as I can see the O7Q and FS700 is still significantly more capable with support for Sonys RAW data stream and all the goodness that brings. I'm guessing the Shogun won't support that.

Will also be be interesting to see how people get on with the support for the raided 2.5" HDD's and SSD's when recording 4K RAW. I presume they will allow any drive? Wonder how many issues there will be?

I guess this will put more pressure on CD to get the promised features out. Competition is good!

Hi Paul,

I had a Atomos Ninja Blade, and all i can say it's come with lots of good feature without buy any part or codec.

1 batterie Atomos, 2 base plate Canon and Nikon, free DNxHD, a good case, the sunhood cost only 35e and fit perfectly and as you wrote, normal SSD.

Maybe the Shogun could be a really good things for thoses who want the Dnxhd with 120fps, if its 10bits.

And yes, competition is good, and I think CD keep under theirs hands some features for the Shogun release.

I still believe in the CD SSD's though. Definitely needed for the top rate 2k and 4k RAW etc. I'm wondering how many problems people will run into when they fit cheap crap drives and expect to record 4k and fill up the drives. The probes with the O7Q is it promised everything to everyone and the coding team obviously just wasn't big enough.

The Shogun would have been a great option if it supported the Sony raw stream out and could record at least 30p 4K ProRes.
According to Juan at Sony they offered the right to use the proprietary FS700 raw stream to many manufacturers so I don't think CD has an exclusive right. But I doubt the shogun has the horsepower to do all the 7Q can/will. Would be great with a lower cost option though for us poor folks ;)

Without that the Shogun will be just another recorder that can record the 8-bit output of the FS700.

Yes there's not much to be gained recording the 8bit output of the FS700. 4:2:2 over internal 4:2:0 I guess.

Shogun seems to be a good device but O7Q is perfect for us FS700 user. CD gave us already much more features than promised (I would not change 60/120fps 4K RAW for 30fps ProRes). 8bit Output is not really an option on FS700.

Well the killer for me is 4k2HD which was a surprise. That's really great video :)

would have aver been nice to have a wireless control though, shame Bluetooth was canned and there's no wifi. The possibilities of remote logging etc would be very cool. Oh well. More cameras are coming out with wifi etc it seems these days.
