Atomos Shogun update

Although I'm not happy about the Shogun being delayed until November I am really excited about the added features!! Take a look at the response I got from them
today.

New Update:
Hello Damen,
The Shogun should arrive in the US early November. We added a few extra features to the product, to further future proof itself. I have listed the newer items below
Our future proof platform (Powerful Generation 2 Processor, Sata 3 @ 6Gb/s, Large FPGA with upgradability) is designed for the following in the future
12G-SDI 4KP60/50 Support
4:4:4 10bit
3D LUTs
FS700 RAW decode
Full 4K - 4096 x 2160 support

As we move closer to the ship date, we will have updated images of the accessories.
Thank you,
Matt

Cool.

I hope they do something about the lemo to XLR adapter. Last I saw of it, it looked untidy and unwieldy.

FS700 Raw support is a welcome addition. FS7 support should be real close behind that as well since they output the same RAW signal (slog2 vs slog3 taken for granted)

I believe that if you read carefully, the listed features may or may not be available when the device ships. The note about the "future proof platform" indicates that the Shogun will be able to support those functions "in the future".

Is this response from the Atomos forums or direct email.

Thanks.

You can view this on their website product page or flyers.

I got an answer for the FS700/FS7 RAW : it won't be available/supported at product launch.

That makes no sense then. What new features are being added that would delay shipping? I understand the point about being upgradable but I dont see how that has anything to do with why it wont ship on time. Maybe he just isnt telling him what is being added. Confusing little riddle.

I don't quite understand what you are saying (you mean that Shogun was delayed ?), but I what I understand is that Atomos is doing some teasing of future updates of the Shogun, let's say for potential customers that would be tempted to buy an OD7Q.

I may sound like a broken record but I repeat : no FS RAW support from day 1 for Shogun.

I'm really interested to learn more about how and how well the xlr audio-in works. Will it be solid and reliable? Will these channels replace the camera's audio track or add 2 more tracks? Will I be able to leave my Zoom H4N at home now?

Yeah. It's confusing. The note mentions new features and future updates with a list. So I'm assuming the new features added to the Shogun havent been revealed yet and he is just stating that it's upgradable too for these at a later date.

Maybe it's a new processor that is being added "Powerful Generation 2 Processor, Sata 3 @ 6Gb/s, Large FPGA"

Oh and no FS RAW support from day 1 for Shogun.

That's fine with me cause I won't be able to afford it until sometime "in the future". My chances of affording the Odyssey 7Q are somewhere "in the distant future" ;)

It makes perfect sense for me. They've changed internal specification of Shogun, accommodating more powerful GPU. It obviously means delays, as they probably had to change blue papers and update manufacturers etc. Shogun with more processing power now will be able to handle RAW output from FS7(00), but that will be provided in future. Come one guys, do you really thought that within this one month delay they could code something that Convergent Design's is taking 1,5 year???

Was someone even thinking it would be there when it shipped? It was always obvious to me that it was a future upgrade. Says so on their webpage and Jeromy Young said so in the interviews from IBC. It was crystal clear all the time, no?

Talked to Atomos today. It's firmware tweaking that is delaying shipping not new features per say. Now that also could mean that new features could be added because it's all in the firmware. Either way 1 month isn't a deal breaker just interesting.

The "Large FPGA" bit means they can add a lot of stuff in firmware. That's a configurable-by-software processor, it takes a lot of time to write and debug the code for it but as long as it has enough resources it allows you to add basically anything you want later on.

The shogun was originally suppose to be available in Sept., then they pushed it back to mid Oct. and now beginning of Nov. They send me the email in response to my original email asking to see images of the Lemo to XLR breakout cable. Something tells me the cable will be difficult to manage in the field if you're trying to get clean audio IN during a run and gun situation.

That's nothing, these days that's practically on-time compared to companies like RED or Convergent Design that ship products or features a year late.
