Atomos Shogun finally delivering?

I was just at CCW in New York today and asked them about this. They said they were shipping initial units in about a week, but they may not be done fulfilling backorders until the first week in December.

That's what we were told on Tuesday by our rep, who's the VP of sales for the US......

looking good with a7S. Shogun recognized "2160P" signal via HDMI, very cool.

this is test set (a7S, Zeiss Loxia 2/50, and Shogun) for the presentation at the InterBEE next week in Japan.

Thanks for the response.
I would like to make you another question: Would you mind to check and tell us the shogun hdmi output resolutions and options, please? I have an EVF that i would like to connect to the Shogun's hdmi output and i think that it only accepts 420, not 422.
Thanks!

yes, it's super glare and we need nice hood. i believe Atomos will release it very shortly.

oh, sorry i only had day for testing them and now they are going back to the Atomos, for the InterBEE, Japan's biggest exhibition next week.

i definitely will ask them the question about that HDMI output thing and will post shortly.

How do you like the quality of the a7s 4k? I presume it's free from moire and aliasing at all recordable frame rates ?

to be honest, i'm usually FS700/F5/Epic guy and very, very serious about those issue. if compare with those bigger camera, yes A7S has moire at UHD. it's not the moire we've seen at 5D2 era camera however it has as minor problem, unfortunately.

have you ever tried to hook the A7S to any UHD monitor? that's the exactly the image quality you can get with Shogun. if you're happy with those quality, they never let you down :)

I have now looked at it in a 4k monitor. Color me impressed! Good things I hope when I can record it!

announcements today re shogun re fs700 are leaving me with that cd feeling. If it took them how long it did to do 4k2hd and 4k prores, as atomos said on new shooter. It's not so simple the debayer etc. Mitch hinted he thought shogun may have to slip a few features to "future", or ""maybe". Looks like the case. Give me a 4k30p ninja that does 1080 60p I'll buy it right now. I'm not sure I can stretch to a shogun just for the a7s when i have a 7q.

fs7 owners, they have a choice. If cd do something soon with hdmi 2 bcam for a7s, I know which one I'd be going for with fs7.

Mitch? Shogun now in mass production. You were right they may join the feature slowboat race. Time to spill the beans on a7s 7q hdmi solution before all a7s and future fs7 owners go shogun? :)

If Atomos can make it record at least 4K 30p in ProRes, then it's a big contender. The killer feature of the 7Q to me is the 4KtoHD. But it's almost twice the cost to get started with the 7Q compared to the Shogun. So if Atomos get 4K ProRes working (and 2K raw) then it's probably the one I'm ending up with. On the other hand, I probably can't afford either in a while so by that time maybe there's amply 7Qs on the second hand market, or more likely, cameras that do the same for the price of a 7Q/Shogun ;)

I've asked atomos about HDMI output options, the answer was: it will only pass through incoming signal. so if you put 4K in then you will have same 4k on output. no downscaling.. It is really disappointing for those who want to have a wireless link to directors playback monitor for example..

As soon as I can say something I will! The first run of Shoguns are all already spoken for, just as our initial runs were. So they sold them to clients already. We will get out word as soon as we can.

When 4K, RAW or anything else is fed into an Odyssey7Q, the SDI and HDMI outputs all feature HD resolution converted signals.

That is great news Mitch. reason to think about cancelling shogun preorder..

It is good the the 7Q can do this, but when you look at the cost of media, maybe you can rethink your cancel. But then why isn't Atomos implementing this in their "future proof" premium recorder? I smell a 4K to HD converter add on.

In order to record 4K ProRes, one needs reasonably fast media. I believe that Atomos is recommending Sandisk Extreme Pro SSDs. When you look into how much these SSDs actually cost, you see that while they are less expensive than our Odyssey SSDs, the price difference is not that dramatic. So this illusion that there is a huge cost benefit in media quickly goes away as you realize that a worrkable amount of memory it is only a matter of a few hundred dollars difference. Of course we feel the price difference is justified in all the other benefits we provide with our SSDs, not the least of which is the power protection mode that prevents files and entire SSDs from being corrupted in the event of a power failure during recording.
