My guess about ProRes RAW 8K over HDMI was spot on. Hopefully this becomes available with the Sony Alpha 1 as well.

Interesting. Here's a comparison chart from the Atomos product page:

Big price jump for 8K, which I guess makes sense.

Also, I didn't see anything about screen brightness. Anyone found out that spec?

Honestly, at first I just guessed as it's recycled hardware, which is the most common business practice in the industry (make a few different products from one design) and Atomos did it for like 5 years with the Shogun, but it says it on B&H (there's always a chance they could be incorrect as well):

But I imagine if it was 1500 or more, they'd share that.

Cool. I didn't check the B&H link... And I'd guess you're right that they'd call out any big improvements. But it would be good of Atomos to make everything clear on their site...

Yeah, maybe their web developer didn't get to it yet, but I found it in the press release.

I checked the press release this morning and it didn't have that info. Note that the file name suggests this is version 2:

Oh, I believe you...I was a mad man checking the R5's specs last summer (before it was shipping) and Canon formatted their online PDF about 5x during my research.

8K over micro HDMI.

I wonder if the upgrade to 8K over HDMI can be done with a FW update?

I've looked around (albeit not that hard) but I'm not sure what the Canon R5 HDMI specification is. I think you need HDMI 2.1 to be able to do 8K, but I'm unsure if this is a hardware or software thing:

https://www.hdmi.org/spec/hdmi2_1

https://www.hdmi.org/spec/index

The Sony A7SIII, FX3 and Sony Alpha 1 proudly state that they have HDMI 2.1. Which is why although it has not been announced or anything, I believe we will most likely see 8K RAW out from the Sony Alpha 1 to the new Atomos Ninja V+ eventually. Currently it only does 4.3K raw out to the Atomos Ninja V, which I have been guessing is a downscale of it's 8.6K sensor.

The R5 manual says something about the 8K modes being only 4K via HDMI so you're probably right.

I wouldn’t purchase this unless you specifically need that feature… feels like a premature release with a quick internal spec bump to accommodate Sony and stay relevant.

I’ll be interesting in a Ninja VI with a thinner and lighter body, better screen, lower power draw, SDI built in, etc etc.

I always hoped they would do more with the Ninja Star.

A small little box you could tuck away somewhere that can do the RAWs and 10-bits and what not without the screen.

Yes! I wonder why it failed. Perhaps no one wanted to buy the CFast cards for it. Maybe the bigger market for Atomos is people who want to record to cheap / high-capacity media.

One thing that occurs to me is that Sony's SD card / CF Express type A slot would be interesting for a Ninja Star 2. If you just bought an external recorder to get around recording time limits or to make a copy for the client or to make proxies you can use SD cards. If you bought it for RAW you can use CF Express A.

Type B could work too...even CFast was enough for certain RAW resolutions/framerates (and prices keep dropping).

I think it mostly disappeared because cameras started to get much better and there was also barely any external recording at that time.

These days, it seems like most of these new mid-tier cameras will have external ProRes RAW.
