Atomos NAB 2012

Man, everyone seems to be so negative about all this. I know we all would like these things like now. But it doesn't happen by snapping your fingers. I for one found the support pretty good. They responded almost the same day when I inquired about the D tap. I for one love my Samurai and works perfect on F3. The new OS seems cool for the logging but thats about it. I agree, the little monitor would be a joke for focus and the false colors seem useless if you already have a focus monitor with that feature. I would give these guys a break. The product works great. So they are a little off the timing target. But who is on schedule these days? Look at Birger and their mount for the F3. What a joke that is.

I´m not negative, just disappointed.
I trusted them, when they said, the Connect converters ship late 2011 (the website still says that).
So I planned them in for a production. Atomos didn´t ship, but announced them after NAB - no dice.
They shifted it back an other month.

This is something I hated about RED, and now a lot of companies play that game.

I think I just need to ignore all announcements of every company and get exited only, if the gear actually hits the shelfs.

They had no choice, most of the competition records in 10 bit and the nano flash records in 8 bit
I would never buy it for that reason alone even though I think it's a good product. Why spend 2k on a field
recorder that you can't upgrade with you camera.

The AF100 only puts out 8bit through SDI, so do you gain anything by recording a 8bit signal over 10bit? (Note: this 8bit limit is found on many other cameras too, but the EX1, which is heavily advertised with the Nanoflash, does output 10bit through SDI).

Each of the recorders offer something different, which I think makes it more difficult for the consumer to make a choice, but good news that we have that choice.

The pros of the Nanoflash is that it has a wide range of low to high bit rates in Long GOP to I-Frame, both HDMI & HD-SDI inputs, plus it has a very low power draw compared to other recorders. If your camera only outputs 8bits, you need flexibility in bit rate recording from day to day & you're really power conscious, then the Nanoflash is a good fit.

If you only need HDMI, work in a ProRes workflow, have plenty of Sony L batteries, you like SSD for media & want a monitor built into the recorder, then the Ninja is a good fit.

I think there is so much competition for these recorders that we're going to keep seeing some new models over the next few years & so you might be able to get a Nanoflash 2 with newer features for under $1000 in 2016.

For the AF100 the main benefit is getting 422 color. I don't know if the added cost and data size justify the increase in color sampling, but the option is available.

Atomos Connect

Atomos Connect

Today I've received an email regarding the Atomos Connect which says:

We are sorry to all who have been waiting for the connects to become available. We have had some hold ups in the production phase.

We are getting very close to the release of the Connect devices and were lucky to have some pre-production ones for NAB 2012.
The full production will be under way very soon. We hope they will be completed by the End of Q2 2012 (hopefully sooner)

We will update this article and our website once these is available.

Best Wishes

Pricing and availability

AtomOS 3.0 is a free firmware update for existing Ninja and Samurai users and will ship 30 April 2012. See www.atomos.com for details.

Yeah, right.

So it´s May 2. in the rest of the world, what is it in Australia?

Ok, I stand corrected. Maybe these guys are dragging their feet. I was going to ask the same question. It's may 5th, do you know where your firmware upgrade is? Not that it's something I gatta have, but would be nice. BTW. Is there a way to delete clips from the Samurai? I've tried everything. Am I missing something???

Now on Facebook they are saying June which in their company terms means by the end of summer. Not a very professional approach. If you are selling to professionals and you announce at NAB that you will deliver April 30, 2012 and a few weeks after that are already amending delivery it just doesn't instill confidence in the company.

This is why publicly traded companies cannot give out information beyond the current quarter boundary or they are subject to revenue recognition and other issues. Privately held companies are not subject to the Sarsbanes-Oxley Act (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarbanes–Oxley_Act). But does it make difficult to plan by. Apple, as a public company takes it to the extreme. Nothing is announced until it is available which makes it difficult for enterprise type companies to plan their budget spending ahead of time (and individual users as well), but it seems to work quite well for them. :)
