ATI Radeon HD 3870 and Media Composer 3 Mac

Hi,

I own a Mac Pro (first Generation) and I am thinking about replacing the original Geforce 7300 GT for a better one.

Well, it seems there are only 2 possible upgrade options on the mac side: Nvidia 8800 GT or the ATI HD 3870. After reading some reviews it seems that the ATI is the clear winner but regarding the Avid system requirements this card is sadly officially not supported (only the x1900 was - in the older iMacs)

My question: does any one use this card in a Mac Pro anyway and does this work or is this card a clear no go for the Avid MC ? I have never used an ATI card in my older PC Systems as there was a lot of trouble with Avid but maybe it is a different situation on the mac side.

Yeah- Use both FCP and Avid on the same Macpro.
I have the 8800- so I have no problem with Avid running.
I have been reading about the ATI and would love to add it to my system.

I doubt it - but is there anyway to install both cards and use the 8800 for Avid and the ATI when I'm running ATI?

im having the same problem. I wanted to get the ATI 3870, however its not supported. Then I have to get the 8800. But now, the problem is the number of outputs. I need atleast 3 and the 8800 only has 2. Can you run 2 8800's? Or can you get a better video card than the 8800 thats has more slots?

I recently upgraded my 1st gen mac pro from the 7300GT to the ATI 3870 and I could not be happier, I saw about a 20% increase on performace on Pro apps specially on after effects and apple color, I am on a fcp system though, no avid

I went ahead and replaced the 8800 with the 3870.
No problem with Avid- yet. So far- so good.
The card is very nice and performs better than 8800 without question, but it is much louder. The fan runs constantly. ATI support tells me- this should not be the case.
I returned the card 3 times. Each replacement was just as loud as the last.
I just decided to live with it. I think I am finally getting use to it.

wow.. I forgot to include that too!! I returned the first one because I thought it was loud as hell, the second one was just as loud, I have decided to just live with it card performs awsome, still kind of noisy
