AT897 vs AT875R - camera mounted

Hi, trying to get a comparison on how these mike would do to capture audio indoors, controlled environment. 4 feet in front of camera by four feet wide.

Thanks!

Those are both nice mics, however, I'd say neither of those two would be the right choice for your application. 4 feet away and 4 feet is pretty wide. You'd be better off looking for a microphone with a cardioid polar pattern.

If you have a moment, watch and listen to the difference between cardioid and shotgun (lobar) polar patterns in the examples and it might help better illustrate the "why".

Not a good idea. There are a few problems with this setup:

1) Shotguns are notoriously poor performers for indoor settings. You need a hyper-cardioid condenser.

2) Even if shotgun mics were viable for interiors, 4 feet is pretty much out of the practical working range.

3) The camera is the absolute last place* you want to put the mic, especially for dialog. The mic needs to be on a boom, shock-mounted. For seated interviews, a mic stand with boom arm overhead is fine, but for movement there needs to be a boom op to handle the mic.

* There are times where on-cam mics are perfectly fine: in a lot of run-and-gun situations for hand-held b-roll recording with ambient sounds, and when simply recording reference audio to sync double-system sound in post. Even at that, you want to make sure that you have ample shock-mounted isolation from the camera. Noise from operator handling and from the tape transport can otherwise move through the camera up into the mic.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately camera mount is my only option. I was looking at a cardioid or hyper for my application. Can you advise me on a mic that is at or under 300. The mk012 scared me away because of the handling noise issues, being that I'm going on camera I believe will only make it worse.
