AT4073 vs. AT4071

I ask what the main difference is between these two because I found the 4071 new for around $350.  Is the 4073 a $200 upgrade?  I would want to use it both mounted and with a boom.  Thanks.

Re: AT4073 vs. AT4071

Matt, I take your post to mean that the difference isn't ALL that huge? I see that the 4071 is longer--is that a problem when mounting it on a DVX?

The price is actually closer to $378, but still a fair sized reduction.

Re: AT4073 vs. AT4071

It's a different mic then the 4073a, but $378 is a total bargain. The 4071a is going to be an OUTDOORS mic ONLY... Unless you find yourself in a large to huge theater with 100% acoustical treatments.

For all normal use, aside from use on a professionally constructed sound-stage... you'll be limited to outside applications.

So you don't want to tell us where you can get one so cheap? If they're in limited supply and you want to be sure to get one for yourself then I understand... but seeing that the normal price on a 4071a is about $650 I'd say your price of $378 is too good to pass up.

I'd buy that as fast as I could. Really.

Re: AT4073 vs. AT4071

No I'm not hoarding the info, just haven't posted it till now. I sound it through Amazon.com from a store called fullcompass.com. Knock yourself out and buy a dozen!

I don't think it's a perfect fit for me since I need something that I can use both indoor and out. If the 4073 will do that, then it's a better investment for me to drop the extra $200. Right?

Re: AT4073 vs. AT4071

Now I lied...I went and bought one because it seemed like such a good deal. Can always sell it and break even if it doesn't work out. Almost seems like a typo...better get em before they realize the mistake!

Re: AT4073 vs. AT4071

Hmm... nutty :D I just called 'em up (express) and they said they don't stock these but they'll drop-ship 'em from Audio Technica... price? $379. I can hardly believe it. Full Compass is a VERY reputable store... so I guess it's legit and NOT gray market anything.

The 4073a is a better mic for OVERALL use, but the 4071a is a great mic for general outdoor use and long distance micing... I honestly can't believe this is their normal price...

Re: AT4073 vs. AT4071

They seemed pretty legit, and also look like they carry everything under the sun there. Smart tactics since they now have me as a customer who will do repeat business with them.

If you don't get one we can talk in a couple months after I've played with it a bit. The 4073 sounds like the better mic for me, but since I don't even have my camera yet it's hard to say. Still sounded too good to pass up...

BTW: Thanks for all the input, tests and other information that has been posted on this site. It has been a huge help!

Re: AT4073 vs. AT4071

if your talking about Full Compass, yes they are legit. I personally know some of the people that work there, and have walked in there many times to purchase something that i didnt want to wait for shipping on. they also have a nice clearance room with some good deals :) . it is a BIG established company , and by NO means is it a fly by night, or little shack in some ally. the warehouse and store are very nice, and its a huge building on its own land. very professional when you walk in.

They are pretty friendly, and although they dont all know as much as wed like them to on certain products because the sales people have to handle selling everything imaginable from the huge inventory. usually they are a bit on the pricey side, but it beats paying for shipping alot of times, and they price match for me anyway.

..anyway , thats just my own personal experience. I hope that should you choose to do any business with them, your experience will be equally pleasant.

Re: AT4073 vs. AT4071

I've got the AT897, would adding the 4073a to my arsenal be a good idea? It sounds like such a great deal.

Re: AT4073 vs. AT4071

The At4073a is $550 at B&H... we're talking about the 4071a which is primarily an outdoor use mic.

It's 15.5" long... not a mic for any on-cam use... but anyway, I'm really tempted to try one out... I honestly can't see how this is a normal price for them... but DON'T call up and say, "Duh, I think you guys are selling these too cheap."

My problem is that I never intended to actually COLLECT mics... I like to get two similar mics and then sell the "loser"... and since I've been really happy with my current shotgun choices I don't have a good reason to buy one of these, except that it just seems like such a good deal... hmm.

Re: AT4073 vs. AT4071

4071a is what I meant to say. Would it be a good investment for outdoor shoots, and use the 897 primarily indoors.

Re: AT4073 vs. AT4071

Well Verde... let us know if you get that At4071a at your door... I ordered one and they called me back to say, "NO they are $630..."

Hmm, I wonder what's gonna' happen with YOUR order...?

Be sure to follow this up!

Re: AT4073 vs. AT4071

Okay, on further investigation... it seems that they had a "B-Stock" 4071a... which could be a return or a demo... and THAT was the one and only mic for $378.45... Well that price STILL shows up on www.amazon.com BUT clearly there was some sort of misunderstanding somewhere along the way.

Since Verde was the first to spot such an incredible deal lets hope that at least he got one for himself...

Even if it was a B-Stock or Demo it's still an incredible, unbelievable deal...

This was all I could think about all day... I thought I had one on the way, but nope. Really I don't need another shotgun anyway... that was just too much temptation to not try for one. ;)

Re: AT4073 vs. AT4071

I was gonna say....that price for that mic new is a couple hundred dollars below dealer cost. Makes sense that it's b-stock, but hey, as long as it works and has some sort of warranty, then you're good as gold. It's important that they tell customers that up front, and you shouldn't have to ask that.

Re: AT4073 vs. AT4071

Will do.  SO far I have the receipt and the notice that it is backordered for a week or so.  I just went back to amazon and see that they corrected the price to $630.  It looks like I slipped through the cracks.  I can't imagine they can pull the price back from me after already selling it to me for another price.  I won't celebrate until I have the unit though.  And who knows...I may be passing the savings onto someone here before too long.  Like I said it's not ideal for what I'm looking to do--simply a deal too good to pass up.

Re: AT4073 vs. AT4071

Wow...2 more posts since I was composing my last one.

They said nothing about b-stock or demo. In fact it said "New." Who knows what I'm getting. If I do decide to return it, again I'll check here first.

Now if someone can only make the same glitch on a new dvx...

Re: AT4073 vs. AT4071

Slipped through the cracks is right! I think the reason they told me that it was a B-Stock unit was to shut me up... I wasn't persistent about it anyway... it was more of a pre-emptive "shh".

In this case I really don't get it... I wasn't in the market for that mic but I called the instant you posted the contact info... that is really crazy stuff. I wonder what the deal is within the company? They told me that it's not a stock item and that it would be drop-shipped to my door directly from AT. I said GREAT, I'll take it... then no deal. I wasn't really surprised when they said they couldn't give that to me, but I sure got hyped up for a few hours!

So if you get one then you probably either slipped through the crack or somebody there is smoking it.
