At what point are you a serial killer?

Has anyone seen the silence of the lambs musical? I knew a couple of guys who did bits from it. It is quite hilarious.

what about someone for hire but enjoys it. like for instance the" iceman" did you ever see the special on him, now there's a serial killer but he got paid hmmmmmm....

Yea, I remember the iceman. I don't think he would technically be classified as a serial killer as he killed strictly for benefit. He didn't get any sexual pleasure from killing anyone (not to say you HAVE to, but it's almost ALWAYS a factor). Alot of serial killers kill for benefit and pleasure at the same time like the first documented American Serial Killer Dr. H H Holmes.

"Serial killers are individuals who, on multiple occasions spread out through time, murder victims who are generally unknown to them beforehand." -Encyclopedia

I don't think this is true either. Alot of serial killers start out by killing someone they know, whether it be a landlord, local schoolgirl, neighbor, family member, friend of a friend etc. It seems to spread out after that making it very hard to catch/link crimes.

yeah but do they keep killing people close to them? maybe some do.

i think there are exceptions to every rule, which is probably why they said "generaly uknown"

that wikipedia site has some great info and they also insert exceptions to certain types of SK's...like this one...

"Gain motivated

Most criminals who commit multiple murders for material ends (such as mob hit men) are not classed as serial killers, because they are motivated by greed rather than psychopathological compulsion. There is a fine line separating such killers, however. For example, Marcel Petiot, who operated in Nazi-occupied France, would classify as a serial killer. He posed as a member of the French Resistance and lured wealthy Jewish people to his home, claiming he could smuggle them out of the country. Instead he murdered them and stole their belongings, killing 63 people before he was finally caught. Although Petiot's primary motivation was materialistic, few could deny that a man willing to slaughter so many people simply to acquire a few dozen suitcases of clothes and jewelry was a compulsive killer and psychopath."

What is important is that it is on separate occasions. You can walk down the street and kill 10 people, but that is mass murder. Kill more than 2 on separate occasions and you are a serial killer.

Hope that helps:thumbsup: Always good to help out an aspiring young murderer.:)

Are you trying for a part on the 10 most wanted list?

There is a quote, and I know I am going to get this wrong, but it says:

Kill one person and you are a murderer. Kill ten people and you are a serial killer. Kill fifty people and you are a maniac. Kill one hundred people and you are a monster. Kill one thousand people and you're a demon. Kill ten thousand people and your a politician. Kill one million people and you're a God.

Can't remember what it is from or the exact wording, but makes you think about the fine line definitions.

Marcel Petiot is a wierd one, because the only real sign that he showed of being a serial killer was the fact that he killed people(as wierd as that sounds). He always killed for monetary gain. He started stealing as a young kid and continued all through his life, ended up being a doctor and a mayor in his town. His first documented murder was on one of his patients (who he robbed). His next was a witness to that murder. Then a girl he did drugs with all the time disappeared after her mother accused him of encouraging her drug addiction. He intended to get rich, and subsequently DID net a fortune posing as a member of the French Resistance. It's hard to say if he was a serial killer, I would probably say he WAS because he used to inject his victims and then he would watch them die through a peep hole. That detail could easily be skewed though, in which case I would say he wasn't.
