At what age would you let your child see Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone?

Please vote in the poll and leave any comments as to why you chose the age you did.

My wife and I were discussing this today as we are trying to gauge when we should introduce our daughter to the first movie in the series.
I would love to see what everyone else is doing.

Please only vote if you have both seen the movie and have children.
I know that my kids radar for movies was terrible until I actually had kids.

It depends what they can handle. My daughter saw Monster House when she was 5 and barely batted an eye. I'd say 7 would probably be okay for the first Harry Potter. The rest get progressively scarier. Also, your child needs a good attention span because that film is like 2 and a half hours long.

My daughter is six but she can handle watching movies. Her attention span is quite good. We were thinking around seven for the first Harry Potter.

Just curious as to what everyone else is doing.

Going to see the Harry Potter exhibit in Toronto so it got us thinking.

My son is 5 and he has seen the whole series. The only thing that creeped him out at all was the spider Aragork or whatever his name is.

I thought it was the Sorcerer's Stone. Hmmm ... kinda depends on how much further you'll let them watch. HP starts out light, but gets pretty dark by the end of the series.

This poll only pertains to the first movie.

What it's called depends on where you live. :)
It was changed in the U.S. to the Sorcerer's Stone.

Ah! "Curiouser and curiouser"

I don't have kids, but did work at a summer camp / after school program for 5 years, so take this with a grain of salt, but my vote would be maybe 8. There is a huge step from 5 to 6, and 7 to 8 it seemed (maybe it was just the water causing that). Harry is "12" in the first one, but I don't think she should have to wait until she's a his age to see it, really.

Never.. As Harry gets older he's getting creepier looking. Soon he's gonna be an old man trying to play a child.. weirdo.

???

I never understand when people say this. Dude is 20 right now playing an 18 year old. That's way younger than most of the cast of Glee and most any other teen show on television today.

Everyone understands that the character is actually aging as the movies progress, right? The books took place over the course of 7 years, the movies will take about 10 years to complete. That's only a 3 year difference.

I let my kids watch a considerable amount more, to say the least...so for Harry Potter, I'd say *2 years old.

*sooner if they're not bored with it

I used to think I was liberal... guess I'll be attending the next TAX protest :(

I guess yer right... I just think of him in the first movie (which I would allow my 6y/o to watch btw) and then FF to now.. he just looks odd to me because I think of him as that kid from the first flick.

LOL! No worries. I'm thinking around 7 or 8 myself.

Really, though. There's only about 2 scenes in the movie that have me pushing it back a bit.

I strongly feel that children shouldn't be overly patronized. When I was a kid I loved things with real story and drama to them, not the mindless crap they're supposed to watch now. And that's part of why I developed to be as capable as I am now. So whenever they're ready is my answer, with a bias towards younger.

6-7, by the time they are 8 they probably watched it at a friends house without you knowing.

Prob is once they see the first one they will want to see them all and they do get pretty dark in the later ones.

I realize the later films are darker than the first one, but I don't understand what's so bad about that. They may be afraid for parts, but it's not going to mess them up. It's a good vs. evil thing, and they'll walk away rooting for good.

I don't think you want my answer seeing as I took my daughter to the AVN Awards in Las Vegas for her 19th birthday!

There's a birthday she'll never forget....

Was it take your daughter to work day?

LMAO! I wish! No, funny story actually...her aunt (the Ex's sister) had a 'product' on display there, she insisted that we visit her booth.

I was taking my daughter to CES for her birthday...just worked out that way.
