GH1 Astral-photography

Hey, does anyone have any experience with the GH1 and astral photography or using infrared filters?

I'm trying to capture some really great star time lapses, but I'm just trying to think of what the best IR filter to use..

watch the last sequence of this video:
used the GH2, but could also have used the GH1, which I have done for similar shots

20mm f1.7 pancake, intervalometer set to take a 13 second exposure every 30 seconds, in Aperture priority with an ISO of 1000 (which was a tad too high, so darkened the image in post a bit)

no IR filter, just a stable tripod and clear sky

I've had the filter stack professionally modified on 2 GH1's for IR photography. The image quality in IR is amazing. The company I used was maxmax.com. They primarily modify cameras for astrometric applications. I highly recommend them. I know this probably goes without saying - but - the mod's are a one-way street, so you have to be sure.

Personally I think it's a charm not to have red things on the sky that your eye doesn't see anyway. Now deep sky photography on the other hand, it's essential.

Theres some great time-lapse photography of the stars and seeing an arm of the milky way come up and down. I was just wondering if there's a two way street to do this, and still take regular ol' photos

GrandLunar, are you thinking of adding an IR filter to a camera? That will probably cause you to have
less light (no visible photons) and that will make it take longer to get the exposure. You will also
remove most of your color sensitivity.

You will probably have an easier time without an additional IR filter. You can mod your camera to
not have its existing internal filter (ala maxmax) but that's mainly for dedicated astrophotographers
that really need every last bit of signal and don't mind having camera that just does one thing well.

Actually, I would skip the filter business and figure out what lens you want to use and how wide open
you can have it before the stars start to blur.

i'm interested in connecting a gh1 to my telescope. will i need anything more than a t-mount and a t-ring? does anyone have any recommendations about what to get?

I have connected a William Optics Apochromatic refractor to my GH1 using a T-mount to Nikkor adapter and it works great....it is a 310mm f4.5 equivalent focal length/Aperture but I also needed to add a WO wide converter to the scope as well so it would focus correctly. It was purchased to use for solar eclipse HD video shooting and I have a 1000 Oaks solar filter for the front of the scope.

As far as using a GH1 for Astro I find the noise levels with long exposure shooting completely unacceptable and much prefer my Nikon cameras for this application but even they arent as good as the Canons for this type of shooting - apparently due to the way Nikons handle RAW processing.

persist more worst problem - take black-room photo in bulb mode ... noise level are quite big for 256" photo
