Assorted gear, looking for discount

I need to grab a bunch of stuff pretty quickly, and I'm about to go with B&H. Before I do that, is there any other reputable dealer I should be looking at?

This is the current list:

$119, shockmount: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=292932&is=REG

$98, headphones: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=49510&is=REG

$155, boompole: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=282822&is=REG

$140, windscreen: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=292345&is=REG

$280, mic: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=300615&is=REG

$445, tripod/head: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=359569&is=REG

Plus I'm still undecided on what to do for a shoulder brace... So that's another $150-$550.

If I do go B&H, is there any chance of a discount if I try to haggle on the phone?

Go with EVS, they're prices are probably cheaper, and if they aren't, they will match B&H's prices.

Spork, can it wait until Friday for me to get to the office, or do you need to order immediately?  If so I can email the prices directly to one of of my sales guys and have him put in an order for you.  ;) I can easily give you better prices than those, and you don't have to haggle with me! ;D

EDIT: Sorry about the big quote-copy, I fixed it.

Re: Assorted gear, looking for discount

I also have a similar kit to that AT897 B&H special kit, with a Hosa right angle cable and a Sennheiser shock-mount.

Well, the sooner the better...

I'm more than willing to do business if there are no major substitutions from what I have listed up there. I really don't particularly like B&H; it's a waste of time visiting the store these days.

One of the folks I work for just moved to Philly, and I see you have a store there. If you stock a wide array of shoulder mount rigs, I could make a trip down to Philly to do some work and stop by your store there. The rest of the stuff I'm OK with buying without touching it (although the boom and mount are a bit iffy, I'll have to trust your recommendations on that), but I really need to see any shoulder mount rigs in person...

Re: Assorted gear, looking for discount

This may not apply to you at all, but I will share my observation. I purchased a boom pole for my first shoot, and here's what I found.

A boom stand (tripod style) with a long pole attachement and counter-weight would have been more useful than the boom pole for most of my shots. Not only do you really need someone to handle the pole, they really need to know what they are doing. I didn't have that extra person on my first shoot and tried to get my son to do it (he just couldn't hold that darn thing still).

Most of my shots were not with people walking and talking on a long stretch, so I thik a stand will work better for me especially when it's just me and the talent. Of course I still have the boom pole when I really do need it..

Re: Assorted gear, looking for discount

Just wanted to close this up. I've been busy since I bought all that stuff from Rush. :) Shooting every weekend, which is cool.

All in all EVS/Rush were great. Beat/matched B&H pricing, and Rush is a great guy to speak with on the phone. Shipping was extremely reasonable (california to nj).

One quick note - Rush, you seem to do some actual production work outside of your sales gig. That's valuable to your customers, you should give yourself an intro (in a new thread) explaining what you do outside of EVS. That would be good for everyone involved. Most people like talking to sales folks that use the equipment being sold.

Re: Assorted gear, looking for discount

Hi spork, I'd feel weird starting personal threads, so I'll tell you right here ;): I edit, do art for, and co-produce content for a nature-DVD series that sees worldwide distro; I DP and sometimes direct short films and full-feature narratives for independent producers; I shoot and edit reality TV content for pilots and TV shows, last pilot was for a party planning reality series; I regularly shoot/edit documentaries, latest one was on the re-emergence of industry in Hong Kong; I write, produce, and direct my own indie movies; I teach lighting seminars, and I also teach camera operation - recently on Warner Bros. lot, students included Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx; I do alot of writing, and have 4 registered screenplays, a novel, and several short stories, one of the screenplays, a thriller, is due for production Jan. of '06; One of my favorite types of production is Music Videos, fun to the last minute, and absolutely no holds barred creative, last one was for the band "Jeddrah". :) I also recently road-managed and did set-construction for a cool magic show that played at the Kodak Theater. It starred a great producer friend of mine, and we are also working on producing his brilliant slapstick comedy screenplay.

Now that I think about it, LA is a pretty doggone cool town, despite the traffic... :D You meet so many great people, from a great comedy writer who was a Green Beret in the 80's, to a fun producer who does concerts in 6 languages all over the world, to a cool employer who races cars on his offtime... Very diverse cool crowd, and great Thai food.;D

That's not weird at all!

I'm sure that in the past you've bought stuff from sales guys that have never even seen the equipment they're selling, have no idea about all the "gotchas" that the stuff they suggest may entail, etc. You get the stuff and in ten minutes of playing with it realize that it's not at all what your really needed because the sales guy had no clue what he/she was selling. If people (meaning the dvxuser.com crowd) know that you actually USE what you SELL, that's really a great sales advantage.

Who am I going to trust when I need something ASAP and I'm not sure which product to get? A guy at the end of an 800# in Brooklyn somewhere or a guy that regularly uses the stuff I'm looking to buy?

Hi Moe, they are very cool to work for, and also very forgiving on time off to do shoots, but M-T & Th-F it is an 8am-5pm job (barring dentist visits and DMV appointments :) ). Most of the stuff I do, happens after dark and on weekends, like all the other guys at EVS. Ramzi is a would-be chalk outline artist / horror director with a film in production, Tommy is an Evil Genius / radio engineer / DJ extraordinaire, and Josh is a... well... we think Josh is a hard-knock gangsta that has lots of gear because it fell out the back of a truck on the same day Jimmy-the-Nose fell on a knife... ;D In fact, i am thinking of starting a Crime fighting team called [glow=red,2,300]Tommy Banzai's 8th Dimension Angeleno Warriors[/glow] ;D Dunno, wha'd you think?
