okay....here's my current plan:

shoot 16x9 sqeeze. mask in post to 1.85 or 2.35. uprez to digibeta for festivals.

has anyone uprezzed something like this? or unmasked sqeeze footage? how did it turn out?

just as a note, planning lots of color correction and filtering...sort of man on fire look, grainy, bleachbypass. very tony scott.

on a related note, when it goes to dvd:

i want the footage to be in the proper aspect ratio and fully wide on all mediums. so if the squeeze dvd is played on a 4.3 tv it will be nicely cropped. on a wide screen tv it will fill the screen width, with cropping on the top and bottom.

when you play cropped 4.3 to 16x9 on a widescreen tv it has black on all sides, like it needs to be expanded to fill the screen which is annoying. want to avoid that. tell me my logic is correct on this.

If you shot in squeeze and edit in 16:9 then it will fit a widescreen tv, it will show blackbars top and bottom on a 4:3 screen. Something cropped to 1.85 or 2.35 will have black bars at the top and bottom on a widescreen because the image is a different shape to the tv... it will be fully wide of course.

How do you unmask squeeze footage?

Yes because you still have a 4:3 image with the top and bottom cropped or blacked out if you will.

I am using ppro. If I dont shoot in squeeze or with an anamorphic adapter I crop the footage in ppro and output the full res file usually calling it blahblah43. I then take that file and import it into a new ppro project which is set to 16:9 (1.2) aspect ratio.

I then use a plugin by Red Giant called Instant HD. I use this plugin not to go to HD but to upres to full 16:9 height and width. For this it works great. I have as yet not tried the upres to hd option. In fact I should and give it a run, but my file sizes would still be limited to what I can fit on DVD for viewing.
