GH4 aspect ratio

is that new firmware for aspect ratio for Anamorphic stuff only? Or can I actually record 4:3 Footage in 1080 or 4k?

Thanks

you can shoot spherical 4x3 if you want. would give you a 3328 x 2496 frame. the GH4 doesn't do any desqueezing in these modes.

ok well basically im tryin to see if i can get the look of the sony vx1000 and a century mk1 fisheye , since the vx1 is sd and has 4:3 aspect , i think a speed booster with a fisheye would be good or the tamron 4-12mm(my friend has it and it looks good) f1.2, or Lensbaby 5.8mm.

So i have to install the new 2.2 firmware to do that then.

It would work, but you would be limited to 30p max, and you'd have the increased rolling shutter of the 4K mode. Actually it may be worse than the normal 4K modes, as the camera is reading more lines.... it would be really sharp/detailed though!

Vignetting would depend on the image circle of the fisheye lens you select. Here's an album comparing the 7.5mm manybrand with BMCC booster/8mm manybrand on my GH4:

I believe the 4KPhoto/Anamorphic mode still doesn't use the full height of the sensor, so with a booster setup you would want a fisheye with a considerably smaller image circle than the 8mm manybrand to get some vignetting going. Perhaps one of the 8mm Sigmas.

That LurkNYC vid isn't 4:3... if you're just after width, the booster/manybrand or booster/peleng setups will basically get you to the HPX/Extreme level, in 16:9. Then you can use the normal 1080p modes in the GH4.

That Lensbaby looks awful. Why shoot 4K through a coke bottle?

Yeah Im goin to go with shooting 1080 60p for skating and extreme close up sports. Thank you so much for your input! That is great ill probably just get the Speed booster + peleng or sigma/rokinon 8mm fisheye.
I like the whole 4:3 aspect fisheye you got goin on with the 4:3 photo mode but that only works with 4K right? cant do that with 1080? Also how much was your setup like cage, handle ect?
I love the look of the 1080 with the BMPCC SB+ Rokinon 8mm, would there be anyway to squeeze a tiny bit more vignetting out of it?

So I should sell my 7.5mm Rokinon an get the 8mm+ a speed booster?

thanks for your help.

edit: the rokinon 7.5mm I have has the non removable sun shade an I remember seeing it on the left side of my shots with my gh2, So if I used the speedbooster id need one that I can remove the shade so it doesnt show up in the footage like yours does

only thing that I dont know much about to get is the speed booster, what kinda ef , nikon? a

GH4 + a regular speedbooster (.71X) + 8mm manybrand will give you no vignetting in 1080p mode. It will be wider than that same Manybrand on a Nikon or Canon APS-C DSLR, but not Extreme wide.

GH4 + a .64X booster (BMCC model or new XL model) + 8mm manybrand will give you what you see in that imgur link- a smidge of vignetting, lots of width. Close to the Extreme as far as I can tell.

Here's a thread on SP about the whole GH + booster thing...

http://forums.skateperception.com/i...-focal-reducer-manybrand-best-setup-for-1000/

I would definitely go with the new XL model over the BMCC model- the BMCC model hits the shutter cover inside the camera and impedes the shutter's motion. The XL model doesn't and is purposely designed for the GH4, so it's sharper with fast glass.

Cages, I heavily modified a Honu Fhugen cage which was about $100, then added the 15mm clamps, 15mm handle, coldshoes, scuba counterweight on quick release, etc... but there's this cage on eBay right now which looks to be pretty much perfect:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/321776414490

...just add a $3 shoe adapter so the cage mounts at the top as well as the bottom (should thread right into the top plate), and a $2 coldshoe mount for your mic. You could do the handle facing backwards and attach a counterweight to the back end like my rig, or just run the handle facing forwards so the cam is right under your hand.

As for whether to go EF or Nikon for the booster... for the manybrand, it doesn't matter. EF booster/EF manybrand and Nikon booster/Nikon manybrand will look exactly the same. The manybrand is all manual anyways so the electronics in the EF booster don't do anything for it. So it comes down to what other type of glass you have/want to get.

The Nikon booster is $100 cheaper but doesn't have electronics, so you won't have IS or AF with Nikon lenses, and you lose the possibility of adapting Canon glass and gaining IS or photo AF (which the EF booster now gives you as of the last firmware update) that way. You can adapt Nikon glass to the EF booster though, with simple cheap adapters, and run it manually.

I'm debating the same thing myself as I'm looking to sell off my Nikon-mount BMCC booster and upgrade to the XL.

ok thanks that clears it up alot for me, XL booster Canon EF. + canon manybrand 8mm or the peleng, dont like the white softness around the vig on those tho, wish someone had some test footy in 1080 with gh4.X3nuQPa.jpg

gh4 w// standard booster . omggg <3

so

right?

almost over $1000. but i guess thats ok cuz i plan on getting the sigma 18-35 1.8 an few other canon lenses too.

Do you need a real circle for what you want to do?

Also do you need the electronic contacts for what you want to do?

I recently picked up a Mitakon Lens Turbo, and paired it with a Canon FD 15mm f2.8 lens, it provides a good amount of distortion and you could build the pair for about $550.

Also that cage on eBay... If you are concerned with keeping your gear to standards, note that any camera without a built in grip will be way to low on the rails for the 15mm LWS standard, so matte box and follow focus might be an issue. If you don't care, then it does look nice and maybe I need to model one for my gh2 after it.

It sucks, but last post in this thread http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?338132-Canon-FDn-15f2-8-20f2-8-and-24f2-8-on-a-GH-camera

Also note that it is a gh2 which has a slightly wider sensor. The equipment rack on the left side was about 2 feet away and slightly in front of the lens, the far wall is about 12 feet away. Should be good with the new .64x speed booster, but then you are at about $1000. My 15f2.8 lens has a $100 EF mount on it, so that puts the lens price at $500.

I would skip the Peleng personally, it's super flare-ey in sunlight which I find super distracting. It is a bit bubblier than the manybrand though, and its image circle is smaller so it'll be a little wider, if you're cool with the flares then go for it.

The only drawback to the manybrand, IMO, is that it's soft until f5.6 or so. So in low-light situations this can be a hassle, although the booster helps counteract this.

You can see more footage of my setup on my instagram:

Yes, if you want to replicate the look of my setup. The normal manybrand without the removeable hood will work too, but you will need to trim the side petals of the hood, and that's a little tricky/risky with the front element right there, so I went for the removeable hood.

A "real circle" (image circle slightly smaller than the image frame, aka vignetting) is exactly what he asked for. It seems really ugly and distracting to "normal" shooters but in the action-sports/skate-style realm, it's pretty normal and the extreme width and distortion is needed for certain styles of shots.

Also that cage on eBay... Yup, it'd be too low for most "real" matteboxes, but a FF should work fine as long as the lens gear isn't massive. And I've seen matteboxes used on rails that low before, so it's possible, with the right MB or some kind of mod. Or, just chuck the rod clamp included with the cage- it's only $90 for the whole thing and the cage & handle are mainly what he's after. You could add a rod clamp with a riser built in, or even shim the included one to a better height.

That lens looks like it is being used in crop mode, wide but not especially wide, certainly not a fisheye wide. Crop mode is about a 5x isn't it? If so that would rate the 6.5 C mount at around 30mm, or the same as a 15mm in normal mode.

I think all this talk of lens length and focal reducers has clouded the original intent. So what kind of angle are you looking for?

120 degrees diagonal?

180 degrees diagonal?

Curved lines on the edges or straight lines on the edges?

Dirt cheap, mid price, expensive?

If you just want a wide with vignettes corners, apply that effect in editing, or buy a step down ring small enough to provide the dark corners or edges. If I pull my 15 Turbo back into the matte box I get the same vignette in the corners.

Looking at stuff on eBay I was reminded of a way to achieve the desired wide angle... This is to buy one of the screw on wide angle diopters, not a lot of money and should provide acceptable results. One example http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMW-GWC1-Conversion-Series-Cameras/dp/B007RKTZAW you might want to get a higher power diopter, there are plenty of different ones on eBay, but a low power might be able to be fitted to your 7.5mm that you have for sale.

This one is a little extreme, but cost to entry might make it worth a try http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=400737441712&alt=web

posted that in 2nd post i think, I want something just like that look. Either A spacer with my 7.5mm fisheye or get the Speedbooster XL and Manybrand EF 8mm with removable hood is what I think ima do sometime down the road when I can find a good deal on a Speedbooster. Since I dont film sports a whole ton ima wait a bit. with sb and 8mm manybrand prolly around 700-800$ (considering I might be able to get decent deal on one on craigslist).

@ 1:09 Starting fisheye shots look amazing too.

I know majority of it is HVX/HPX 200/170 with Extreme and or AC130/160 with same extreme.
