Aspect Ratio problem.

Okay, I have a huge question about aspect ratio.

I'm shooting in 720p/24pN, and when I import the footage into Final Cut Pro, the images look right. But whenever I go to export them as .mov files, it always comes out 4:3. I was having trouble with this for awhile, but I just realized now that the .mov files imported into FCP from my p2 card are all in 960x720. Which is 4:3. Yet they appear anamorphic, and that is how they are captured in camera using 720p/24pN. I don't understand that at all. Is that normal?!? Could someone please explain?!?

I thought that it was suppose to capture in 1280x720?!

Found this in the FCP HD Help Manual:
Regardless of the specific resolution used, DVCPROHD always captures and displays an image with an aspect ratio of 16:9 (or 1.78).

But I think the reason that the frame size is 960x720 is why whenever I go to export, my footage ends up looking like 4:3. What is the best way to correct this without losing resolution?

The footage is squeezed; that's just how the DVCPROHD codec is standardized. Make sure your SEQUENCE settings are set to 960x720 but when you EXPORT, choose 1280x720 in the HD codec of your choice.

Your FCP Sequence settings with 720P24N should be:

Frame Size 960x720
Pixel Aspec Ration 960x720 (make sure you do NOT have Anamorhic checked)
Editing Timebase 23.98
Compressor DVCPro HD 720p60

You know you've done this correctly if you put a clip into the timeline and you do not have to render.

To export a Quicktimefrom 720p24N:

DVCPRo HD export = Export Quicktime with current settings (or DVCPro HD 720P24)

Other Quicktime formats = Export Quicktime Conversion (pick a compression format but set the size to 1280 x 720!

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help! I wasn't changing the framesize to 1280x720 when I exported. It seems to work smoothly now!
