F5: Asian Envy's "The Wolf"

Hi Guys,

Here's the music video for Asian Envy's song "The Wolf". This was the very first project I shot on the F5 a little over a year ago. Shot primarily on Zeiss CP.2s in SR444 (with a little extra help from Blackmagic 4k, 2.5k, and Pocket Cameras, and a Nikon D800 for the underwater work).

I'd be keen to hear your thoughts.

I like the polarized vintage look throughout the video. Cutting to the girls and peachy skin-tone get a bit jarring for me.

Overall looks great and like sh1t ton of work. How many days to shoot it?
 
Cheers. Yeah, the sheer volume of material we got was pretty crazy for a music video (in my experience at least). We had four days at our principal location and then another half day for the underwater work.
 
I really appreciate the immense amount of work that went into this. I can only imagine the amount of footage that was left on the cutting room floor. Underwater shots looked great. I'd like to hear how you managed them. I also enjoyed seeing you at work in the BTS vid. Job well done.

Paul, the underwater material was a bit of a nightmare. I'd made it very clear that we'd need a proper diving pool to get the shots we'd need, but... as always... budget issues reared their head, and we ended up in just a generously deep (about 3m) private pool in someone's backyard... in the middle of winter... with no heating for the water.

That meant the water was only about 12-13 degrees celsius, and without any kind of wetsuit, our talent was near delirious within about 10 minutes. So the shots that made it into the video are literally the few usable seconds we were able to capture. In terms of lighting setup, I had a 1.2k HMI blasting directly into the water above the talent, and blacked the pool out with fabrics. My dad is very keen (and formerly professional) underwater photographer, so I got him to operate camera for me using his D800 in an Ikelite housing. We shot background plates at 1080p25 and the footage of Dan (our talent) at 720p50 to get us some more heightened slowmotion.

At f/2.8 and 50fps the 1.2k HMI really wasn't enough light, so I had to bump up the ISO on the camera significantly more than I'd like. But the end result is about as good as I could hope for given the conditions we had for shooting it.
