Artsy dance film - pushing the FS700/7Q to the max!

Hey guys,

I just completed the work on this little film here - a showcase of Malene Ostergaard's (So You Think You Can Dance?) excellent dancing skills:

The video was shot over two days in California using the FS700/7Q on a tripod with an added Surp Genie to pan the camera in a steady motion - very simple setup:

Everything was shot in 4K uncompressed 50fps except for the last two shots during the credit - those are 120fps.

I shot about 1.3TB of footage and converted it to proxy clips using Adobe Media Encoder. Those were edited in Premiere and then copy/pasted to an After Effects timeline where I did the time ramping and transitions. Then I replaced the proxy files with the DNG sequences and graded it using solely Adobe's RAW utility.

I hope you guys like it :-)

For those interested, here's two other videos I did the same way:

Thanks - glad you like it! And thanks for an awesome product - no 7Q hiccups during any of these three shoots whatsoever!

Yes I tried to match her position in the frame as much as possible by scaling and repositioning the image. That's why I shot it in 4K and not 2K.

I've done something similar on a music video once, where I used the extra resolution from a 4K image (RED) to stabilize a performer's face:

(around 0:51)

Can't wait to explore the possibilities of 4K some more!

Can you post the link to the video? The embedded video doesn't show up on mobile devices. I do most of my forum reading on my iPad and would like to check it out!

What a lovely video! Great work! The sense of motion you and the dancer created from such a simple camera move is really wonderful, and your selection of locations, time of day, and costuming pulled it all together wonderfully! Congrats!

I caught this yesterday and was really impressed, GREAT JOB!!!! Great concept executed extremely well.

Question? What video codec and bit rate are you uploading to vimeo? I just completed my first piece with the 7Q and have been doing test loads to vimeo all day....I keep getting significant macro blocking happening in some shots which is killing me. It's not there in the H.264 files I'm uploading. I've tried uploading at tons of different mbps. Really appreciate the advice!

Just to mention, one thing that I was really frustrated and confused at is when I checked out one of the uploads in 720p before choosing to UPGRADE the video BACK to 1080p the macro blocking was a lot less in these few specific areas I had been trying to conquer. But after the upgrade to 1080p it was just as bad again. Is there a way to upload to vimeo in 1080p and not have it convert to 720p which causes you to reconvert it back to 1080p? Sorry, really not trying to steal this thread away, but your upload looks stellar so I got to ask. Turning in video to band tomorrow!

Thanks for all the great feedback - I really appreciate it!

Ashclever, these were actually just uploaded as MOV h.264 files at a bitrate of about 10Mbps.

Interesting...I don't know what is up with my video then. It just has this one part that always looks macro blocky. I have tried h.264 at a ton of different bit rates including a variable of 10-14mbps. Was yours a variable or did you lock it down at 10mbps? I had read uploading files with more mbps provided more info for vimeo or youtube to works it's compression out the best. Maybe that was wrong? lol. Well the video goes live tomorrow morning, might have to live with it on the youtube version. Could still replace my personal vimeo one at least though.
