Artificially Pan in Timelapse Sequence

I am filming a project in 720 30p, and I want to include some timelapse footage. I don't have the budget to buy a motorized tripod head that can pan slowly over the course of a timelapse sequence, but I would like to try to add this effect. My question is this:

Would it be possible to film my timelapse sequence at 1080 and then create the pan effect in Media Composer by panning across the 1080 image within the timeline? I can not mix formats on my timeline, so I am not sure how this would be done. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Aloha,

the simplest way would be to export your 1080 to an compositing package ( After Effect, Combustion, Shake, Fusion...) and do the pan there.

You can do it inside MC. For something that simple I'd be surprised if going out to a compositor would give you any better quality, but I could be wrong.

I'm glad to hear you say it is simple. Any suggestions as to how to do it? Does it require working in 2 seperate projects - one for the 1080 sequence where I pan through the clip and then export it at 720 - and then a second project in 720 for the clip to be imported and to mix with the rest of my footage?

Sorry I am such a rookie. Any help is really appreciated.

I apologize. Some how I was reading your inital post so quickly that I missed the mixing of 720 and 1080 (I know, how could I miss THAT?). In light of that, eLeventy's suggestion is probably best.
