Artifacts only on the reds?

I was shooting some footage of a man who was wearing a red shirt, and I noticed that it was full of artifacts. Every fold and crease of his shirt was showing edge artifacts. There was a red flag behind him, same thing. So I did a test using the American flag, the blue's and whites are fine but the reds had edge artifacts. Can anyone help me?

Its a result of the DV compression codec. It really hurts the reds. If you have FCP, I like adding the "Color Smoothing 4:1:1" filter to it. (Its in the video filter, chroma key tab).

There are some aftermarket plugins that do the same thing but somewhat better. Nattress is one that comes to mind that I've liked.

I was wondering if this color smoothing is best to apply to ALL dv footage? Like, your WHOLE movie, as opposed to just those offensive bright reds?

If you have it, it really makes a difference to set your timeline to Apple ProRes then apply Magic Bullet's Deartifacter set at 4:1:1. It does take a while to render though, so I edit, then apply it to all my clips and have it render while it outputs in compressor.
