My parents don't have the money to send me to a film school, so is the next best bet to just go through an art school and then get up on my feet and make music videos? That is the profession i want to go into more than anything, and i honestly want to know from you guys if you think i have enough talent to just get into the industry? And what school do you think would be best for my skills?

I am a senior as of this school year in high school, so i have a little while to decide but any help would be great.

thank you very much.

Their are allot of forums on this topic. you dont need film school to make movies or have a job. The only think I want to go to film school for is to network with people. You can learn everything you NEED to know about filmmaking by PAing on sets and hanging out on dvxuser. If I were you I would start working on as many productions as possible until you have to get a new contact book. Just go and work with as many people you can as long as they are above you and you can learn from them. Don't go out and buy an HVX200 and a website and then expect to get into the buisness. I would trade all of my gear for more contacts. Once you work on enough of other peoples productions and get respect you can either rent or borrow other peoples gear until you can not only afford your gear but justify your gear. Hope this helps good luck.

P.S I had a couple of friends who went to A I and hated it...

Just re read your question and I realized I didnt really answer it well. Do you have enough talent - Yes. Do you know the right people yet - probably not. So this is the thing you need to think about with film school. I would suggest somewhere in NYC or LA to be in the right area to do what you want to do. If money is a problem then you really dont need NYU tish or USC or any of the other ivy league film schools if you will. Look at SVA in NYC.

Are there any other institutes such as SVA that any one can think of. Is there a place where I can make music videos as part of my curriculum? Is there a place that teaches about music videos? If not would you recommend just start is the business with a part time job and try to keep making more music videos for more bands, while at the same time interning with more videos?

Well I dont think their are any schools that specialize in just music videos. In my opinion you should try to learn everything and then apply it to music videos. You did a great job on that music video you posted here so no doubt you can get more jobs based off of that. But I noticed you are in colorado... In my opinion you need to get out of colorado and move to a major city to get started. I don't know where you are financially but film school would be a good idea for you.

yeah i think that's good advice, i'll just take the classes they provide and use it for my music videos. some film school in california or new york would be good, probably california...for variety of locations...so if any body can think of some good film schools/art institutes.

Honestly i have about $50,000 total for tuition/room and board/food/transportation.

I would like to have some other people give input here but I dont think that is enough for film school. I know for a fact that NYU is 40k per year. I dont know about SVA I am sure its cheaper but I would expect to pay 100k. I dont know ill bet some people here with bigger balls will contribute to say you should spend that on other stuff and go out, take risks and shoot. I think your main focus should be networking. In my opinion you dont have much to learn after seeing that music video you just need to develop your craft and meet allot of bands and filmmakers. I think you should consider moving to a city like I mentioned before.

Thanks for the kind words!:)

I talked it over with my dad and maybe taking a year off and staying home while i do internships and continue to make more music videos would be a good option. after that, move to california or somewhere with a big music scene and start on my own.

i would also like other thoughts, any body?

The world-renowned Art Institute of Chicago houses both a museum and school. The museum contains more than 300000 works of art while nearly 3000 students

Some of the greatest filmmakers in history never went to film school. Learn through books, the internet, forum critiques or more importantly your own experiences. If you really have talent (which I think you do) it's bound to get noticed and grow.

goodluck

A couple of points... if you are use to nice pleasant environments, a bit of a slow pace, friends actually being friends... So. Cal movie industry is none of that... people who do succeed need not be total assholes, but one definitely has to have more than an average share of selfconfidence, determination, and thick skin, and willing to throw friends and neighbors under the bus if need be...

However, I did a cursory google for 'film school denver', and the following site:

I don't know about the 'Colorado Film School', but the "Art Institute" is a nation wide chain of schools directed to 'artistic' development.

I would recommend looking closer to home, until you have the development to carry you through whatever it may take in California...

It is my personal opinion that with the development of Internet as the world wide carrier of entertainment, the need to 'be in Hollywood' will decline, and there will be more opportunities for people who are not on the 'in crowd' of Hollywood, nor inclined to be on the 'in crowd', to be successful outside of Hollywood.

I've lived my life in San Diego, about 120 miles from 'Hollywood', and many friends, acquaintences, joe blows on the street, have 'gone to Hollywood', and never heard from again... in particular, I've never seen a IMDB credit for any of my highschool friends, some of which went to UCLA, or other So Cal colleges, with a goal of working in the industry. (My family was not rich enough to know anyone who could afford USC...)

What you could think about is getting a BA at a Colorado state uni/college, then do a Masters at one of the more prestigious film schools. I think that would actually give you better training on the 'hands on', provided the school has equipment, and then you get the 'connections' that the prestigious schools have.
