F55: Art Adams Does it Again...hack-alexa-lut-into-sony-f-cameras

LC709A A is for Art Adams.. yeah sure it is.. an odd thing to put into your own article.. again.. .. Ben has put out a few adjusted LC709A .. LUTS about a year ago or more on the Sony forum.. e.g.. 0 IRE black and 109% white.. 0 BLK and 100% white.. to do the same as Art has done.. it does look nice as a bake in..

Have you read Art's earlier article on the creation of the LC709A LUT? We almost certainly have him to thank for bringing easy, attractive colour response to these cameras. LC709A was literally a game-changer for these cameras, and it's Art's research that got us there.

No matter how many times I try to get my head around it, understanding LUTcalc seems to beyond me, so if anyone can manufacture this revised LUT and share it with us, I'd certainly be grateful for it.

As would I (grateful). I've created my own Extended LUTS using LutCalc... but just tried to the first step in Art's article... and perhaps Arri has pulled down the Amira color tool... not finding it in their downloads area...hmmmm - ok *edit* found it now...

Yeah have read a lot of his stuff.. still don't think the A is for Art Adams though.. seems even Sony engineers have a sense of humor more like...

Google Tweaked LC709A LUTS.. and you find Bens very easily .. I use them and they are very good.. although I hear he wanted to change it to LC709B..

Actually Juan Martinez told me the A was for Art Adams who designed it.

I actually turned Art on to LUTCalc and how it could be used to make things like fluorescent LUT's and Extended LUT's for use for burning-in WYSIWYG in camera, but he took it much further than I would have, and I never bothered to write an article let alone figure out what was wrong with LC709A. Makes sense that the guy who created it would have the best sense of what was wrong with it as well.

I've been using Ben's extended LUT's and they look pretty damn good, but perhaps the Amira LUT is better. Seems like it might lose a stop of latitude though, that's what confuses me in the article.

I made a modified LC709A LUT a year ago because I also found the blacks on LC709A were a bit too high sometimes giving a slightly washed out looking image.

It's easy to modify the LUT if anyone wants to try it. Just open Resolve, load the LUT, make your adjustment and then export it as a new LUT and off you go.

Also the ARRI to Rec709 LUT built into Resolve works quite nicely on slog3 footage. For slog2 footage I still like the F65 beta LUT which takes slog2 to Rec709.

Right there with you. This stuff is where I reach my technical limit. I even read the article twice. :)

Or do it in LUTCalc.

Ha. I would like to personally buy Ben a beverage for creating this wizardry in the first place... but also folks like Lenny & Art who continue to help explain it (and make it a bit more user friendly) and offer great suggestions for it's use. I'm very keen to see what v 2.0 will bring...

Rather than the totally unknown Arri Alexa that its was built to replicate.. sure I,ll buy a wooden nickel off you .. :).. but for sure a lucky and worthy coincidence ..

Considering Mitch Gross has a pretty direct line to a lot of people at Sony, and his company has a working relationship with Sony...

Art has said that the A stands for Alexa Emulation or Art Adams depending who you ask at Sony.

Buy hey, if he did have any influence on having Sony add this type of LUT then big kudos to him.

Its cool man.. I have a working relationship with Sony too.. bought 3 of their camera,s.. just rattling the cage a bit.. yes agreed the man deserves high respect for getting the thing made in the first place.. and Ive read a lot of his stuff about color space too..

Its also beyond me because I don't know where he is going.. all the images on that page look basically half done.

So is that what he is getting off the camera? his final result after a grade or what.. they certainly are not IMO finished images.

Like saying 709a doesnt have enough sat/contrast.. sure it doesnt it is not meant to it is a fantastic start point to grade.
