DV Dailies - ARRI To Ship New Cooler, Ceramic Based Lights

by Mike Washlesky, 11:00 AM CDT, October 8th, 2004

The ARRI Group, makers of professional lighting and camera equipment, have announced the upcoming release of a new line of lamps called the ARRI X Ceramic 250 series. The ARRI X Ceramic 250 features the discharge output of a 1K light with the power consumption of a 250W and cooler running temps for more comfortable sets. According to The ARRI Group:

The ARRI X Ceramic employs the new Ceramic ST 250 HR discharge lamp from Philips, which produces a 3200K tungsten quality light.

This new lamp from Philips provides almost the same light output as a 1K halogen lamp, yet consumes just a quarter of its power. Besides considerable cost savings due to the low power consumption (250W) the fixture dissipates significantly less heat than a halogen fixture, making it a "cool" unit which can be touched with bare hands even after hours of operation. Talent will appreciate looking good with less discomfort.

The ARRI X Ceramic 250 is based on the design of the ARRI X Series, but includes a built-in ballast and igniter and can be directly plugged to power. Using the ARRI X reflector technology guarantees excellent light distribution, perfect for a smooth and cool background or fill light. With optional snoot and eggcrates a smooth but directional source makes the Arri X Ceramic a great key. Alternately you can create sharp shadows by switching to a black reflector and a clear safety glass.

You can find more information about the ARRI X Ceramic 250 lamps at the ARRI Group Web site. The lights are expected to be available by late November.

Re: ARRI To Ship New Ceramic Lights

Sounds like a tungsten-balanced HMI. Very nice. Probably be way pricey, but if not, I'm most definitely interested!

Re: ARRI To Ship New Ceramic Lights

I think those are going to cost a bundle. Definitely cool though.

Re: ARRI To Ship New Ceramic Lights

The efficiency of HMI but with tungsten-type balance: should look beautiful! HMI's always seem a bit too 'cold' on skin tones to me....

Re: ARRI To Ship New Ceramic Lights

I wonder why they didn't design this as a lens based instrument. It seems odd that the bulb is placed in front of a shallow reflector and behind frosted front glass. It seems too soft to be usefull in longer shots and too bright to be useful in closer ones.

I'd like to see more data on falloff. 125 degrees at 10 feet with 430 lux is about the same as general commercial office lighting levels, so I wonder how much luminosity it's pushing out at 4 to 8 feet.

Could be promising though!

Re: ARRI To Ship New Ceramic Lights

I'd love to see a price point on these lights. They could be a real asset to my lighting package. Now, just gotta save up the cash.

Re: ARRI To Ship New Ceramic Lights

Checked with my local supplier, the Arri X lights are not new (maybe reintroduced?) but are expensive appx 5-6 THOUSAND.
