The D-21 produces brilliant film like images that are directly comparable to the Alexa. It shares the same Arri Imaging Technology and ArriRAWresolution as the Alexa Studio camera of 2880 x 2160 pixels 4x3 and 2880 x 1620 pixels 16x9.
The D-21 incorporates a bright optical viewfinder w/glow. The rotating mirror shutter design eliminates rolling shutter artifacts.

Arri D21 Information
Image Quality:
The D-21 has that Arri/Alexa look that is unparalleled in any other line of cameras. It uses the same sensor used in the Arriscan film scanner which is 6K. The sensor in the camera is down sampled to 2.8K due to the Bayer mask.
The images produced look alive, not like plastic. Blacks are deep and satin, color is vivid and rich. Skin tones and neutral shades render subtly under tungsten light. There is an organic grain, not pattern noise but subtitle film like texture. The cameras native 200ASA makes it ideal for day exterior shots with little need for ND (particularly when 100ASA is selected) and no need for IR NDs. At 200ASA, it is suitable for most interior and exterior productions.
The D-21 is basically a Studio Alexa with out internal recording and optimized for 200ASA. The biggest difference is the price. (A used Alexa Studio is about $50,000. used) Compatible Pro-Res recorders like the Black Magic are less than $350.
When this camera was being perfected as the D-20, Arri had its future riding on its success. The D-20s were never sold. The technology was constantly improved and customer feedback was applied. For example, this camera has no fan. Most of the body is a heat sink. If it had a fan, it would be a third smaller. The idea was that this had to be a direct alternative to film. With all the dependability of film.
Durability:
Arri's focus on reliability and durability is evident in the design of the D-21. Built to be both dependable and user-friendly, they avoided excessively deep menus and illogical accessories. It has a familiar, straight-forward design. The D-21 is basically a 435 with a digital sensor. And because Arri built the D-21 to professional filmmaking standards, it doesn't require a cage to prevent it from being crushed by its own accessories.
Accessories:
The D-21 uses all common Arri 35mm style matte boxes and follow focuses.
Anamorphic:
Because of the true 4x3 Super 35mm sensor, you can use Anamorphic lenses without cropping the sensor or compromising the look of the lens. The D-21 was the only camera to offer this until the Alexa Studio was introduced.
Outputs Formats:
The D-21 has multiple output modes and can perform any two at the same time. All are uncompressed.
