Has anyone tried or bought the new Arri Production Baseplate for the F5? The quality looks excellent and I do like the VCT-14 interface, but it's hard to find someone who has actually got one.

The arri baseplate for the f5/f55 is pretty much the same add the elements micron baseplate. That one is also cheaper.
The one thing about the arri baseplate is that with this shoulder mount (if you're getting that too) is that... From the reviews I heard... The rubber shoulder pad is a smooth rubber, so it may slip off the shoulders more easily than the micron one as it's a better rubber mount.

The shoulder pad on the Arri unit is (to my knowledge) able to be mounted considerably further forward than any of the alternatives. Which means you can get the shoulder pad under the camera's actual centre of gravity (something many other baseplates won't allow, unless you're also running the raw recorder with a large battery on the end of it.

Oh yeah, I just realized, that it can slide forward and back a bit to adjust the balance better. Depending where the center of gravity is, it can help or may not be needed

Andrew, that's the original Arri baseplate. It's non adjustable. The one at the head of this thread is a completely different design, more for ENG folks.

I was actually just looking at the videos and some pictures. I too just noticed there are two different designs. One is adjustable, one isnt.

But is the adjustment forward, farther than the just screwed in one? I dont really think so. Maybe not? Seems like it will slide back more than forward. So, maybe the Elements one is more worth it?
Just saying..

Where did you guys find the baseplate with the sliding mount?

I stand corrected. Didn't notice the difference in the profile. That revision is good. One detail that bothers me is the small surface area where the rosette assemblies attach the main plate. The Tilta plate suffers from this same issue where the rear hanger attaches to the main the plate.

Just in case some people aren't convinced that ARRI is thoughtful forward thinking company, I present to you this...

The newest of the Arri baseplates will move farther forward for balance. Look at the top right pic on the Arri PCA sheet.

The only downside of the newer design, that I can see, is that it's not built to go to a BP-9 or BP-8 plate if you need for studio sized zooms.

Arri makes two baseplates, the new one is not a revision it is a second option. The original can act as a riser for studio bridgeplates or can attach directly to a tripod. The new model is for use on a video-style tripod quick-release plate, such as a Sony VCT-14. The new Broadcast base also features perhaps the longest range of adjustment front to back for the shoulder pad for any baseplate to this camera. And it is also very light. It's a pretty sweet option.

I bought a Shape 7000 for my F3 and found it overbuilt, very heavy, and with arms that made the camera unnecessarily wide, by 3 - 4". The ARRI appears to be similar in the baseplate, but is lighter and not dependent on the V-lock baseplate - I think any tripod plate can be attached. I don't mean to diss Shape, as they built a very solid unit with neat push button arms, it just is way to much for me. The ARRI appears a far more versatile and elegant solution. You might look also at Vocas, who make some very nice support gear.

Have you looked at this http://www.vocas.com/accessories/base-plate-for-sony-pmw-f5-f55 ?

I've got one. It's a good, simple option for the VCT14. It allows the shoulder pad to be moved, and it also allows the camera to be mounted further back on the baseplate, thus putting the shoulderpad right under the camera.

The COG of the camera is really dependent on how you set it up, with a cine zoom on the front it's virtually impossible to get the shoulder pad under the COG, however start adding a Camwave, battery, and ZAXCOM to the back of the camera, and you start to get it back toward the middle.

Vocas plate is quite good. Some clients moved from SHAPE to VOCAS of which I have delivered quite a few. It offers the ability with simple change of a front shoe to go to VCT14 for ENG or BP8/BP9 style base plates for 19mm Studio configuration. It is well built but not terribly overbuilt. Other than the dedicated Arri VCT14 plate this one seems to give the greatest travel for the shoulder pad to be as far forward as possible. The flexible nature of the unit to mount to 19mm plates is a nice bonus. Movcam also has a plate with flexible mounting capabilities for VCT-14 and BP8/9 style studio plates http://16x9inc.com/shop/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=1126
