Got 50k to spend big daddy? Good, then meet Alexa from ARRI, a German company founded in 1917 that just happens to be the world's largest motion picture equipment manufacturer. Alexa is ARRI's answer to the RED ONE digital, so don't be held captive by your consumer-based experience of what a camera is or what it should look like. ARRI has a trio of cams slated for release in 2010 offering a 3.5k pixel count, 800+ El equivalent sensitivity, 1 to 60fps frame rate, electronic viewfinder and on-board HD recording. The A-EV Plus model adds uncompressed on-board recording and wireless remote control to the 16:9 aspect ratio shooting A-EV. The A-OV Plus switches things up to a 4:3 aspect and adds an optical viewfinder to the mix. The rest of the details will arrive during an April 6th launch event where ARRI will reveal the complete media, format, and what's promised to be a "super fast workflow."

Until then, check a side-by-side test done by the cats over at Animation World Network pitting a prototype Alexa against a RED One equipped with a new MysteriumX sensor and software. AWN was so enthusiastic by the results of the two cams that it proclaimed, "2010 is the year that celluloid died." Jim Jannard, RED CEO, graciously responded to the test by saying, "We had expected the images to be very similar and it appears that this test confirms that." He then added the following:
"We have believed, since IBC last year, that these two platforms would be the ones standing for the future. We are very proud to be in such good company. But for the moment, we tip our hats to Arri."
Now hit the source links for the full read because the future of film looks set to become historic.

It's interesting that they see a market for cameras that are more expensive than $70,000 (body price) in 2010 while the majority of users are trying to make things work at less than $10,000.

The most expensive model with the mechanical shutter should be free from rolling shutter artifacts.

RED wins in the industrial design section. This looks like a cheap AM/FM ghettoblaster with the speakers knocked off by a runaway Toyota!

I kinda like the industrial design of these Arri's, basic, blocky, like G1 Transformers! Though RED certainly does have that "cool" factor. :D
RED so far has the best digital image I've seen.

they both look like bricks of metal/plastic too me... with the RED brick ready to go to war.

for style, look at ikonoshop.... beautiful.

Arri, as far as I am aware, has not announced a wavelet codec (like red raw) or any other type of proprietary compression algorithm. It seems they are banking on storage specs improving enough to handle raw sdi at 3 gbs.

I also think it is a mistake to introduce a 3k camera (3.5k including look around) at this price point. I know most theaters are only 2k, but film is already rated about 3.2k and 14-15 steps of latitude (depending on the stock). Why would we want to step backwards? Red has already (nearly) matched the performance with the RED ONE M-X. A cameras that is less then half the price and available now. Epic will be able to match or outperform in many respects.

I could care less about the style and more about the ergonomics / functionality.

I am PUMPED for NAB

Arri look much more "streamlined" than the RED...yes, it looks like a fancy box, but form following function.

The camera in the photo above is actually a wooden mockup. I was lucky enough to bump into a real working alexa yesterday whilst setting up for a show at Elstree Studios in London.

Its rather nice. Solid, arri like. Image is as expected, incredible.

To me, it looks like it is made of styrofoam, and the "display" is sooooo analog.

Yeah I saw the mockup too. Some components were real (lemos etc) but the body was a sort of wooden block, whittled down at the edges and painted with a nice crackle coat grey. Was quite convincing, with a real ultraprime on the front.

I used the 7D to take some decent photos, will upload them tomorrow.

Its a nice camera. No EVF yet, but the images are amazing. Its good, if i had 50 grand a need for a cinema camera like that, id buy it!

good to hear people trashing arri on the least relevant part of what a frigging camera does (being looked at)

Arri has been making cameras longer than stupid morons have been getting excited about red vapourware.
