Around the World in 80 Days

This is the trailer for my film based on my year-off from college, traveling, and finding myself. It's still rough, there are quite a few things I would like to change/add.

ANY feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I'm also very interested in possibly improving the quality of my cinematography. I see so many people's screengrabs/shorts that look so film-like, and I feel I've been having trouble achieving that.

Interesting.. Man, I wish I could travel the world; well actually you left out Asia? What you got something against Asian countries? Just playing man... :) Yeah, that’s one way to finding one self. I'm too broke to travel.

If you want to achieve a "film look" without the processing of post then it’s a matter of Composition, lighting, framing and a good eye. If you got cataracts, then you’re out of luck. In post, you can always tweak with color corrections or use magic bullet to process the different film looks. I myself never use magic bullet because it takes years to render. I can almost achieve identical looks with just using my NLE color correction tools. You can also tweak the looks right on camera as well. But be careful and make sure it’s exactly what you’re looking for. Peace and good luck!!

Wow, thats really good. Makes me want to see the finished piece. How long were you gone, 80 days? What sort of setup did you shoot with?

I like it a lot! I do agree... the rap is a little loud and does kind of distract from the rest of the video. But it looked great. The riding shots were very cool. It looks very much like a documentary style of shooting, and if that's what you were going for than your cinematography was great! I love the shot from inside that... oh what do you call it... the transportation unit suspended by wires... heh, well you know what I'm talking about. The shot from inside it was awesome!

I'd love to see the finished product.

I've been traveling since July 2004, with some stops at home in NYC in between. I've basically been traveling alone, so I have been shooting with a documentary style in mind. However, in the trailer I wanted to use images with me in it to give it more of a narrative thread with a main character, however, since the majority of the footage was shot by me, I wont be able to keep that up in the finished piece.

I've basically been shooting with the DVX100A in 24pA, and no adjustments to Gamma, no filters or anything like that, pretty much bare bones.

Nice

Nice

The gondola spring:) Great stuff man, felt it all the way through. I think you achieved a very good look with the dvx, its not exactly film, but its not exactly video. You did a great job! When's the whole movie coming out!?!?! I like the trailer a lot. I assume you were a one man crew? Musta been a ***** setting up those shots of yourself? Not to mention having people look at you weird!?

that was dope homie, do your thang!

i really like the mood you created with this trailer... when i use my dvx i like to bump down the master pedstal to -6or-7... just expirement and youll get it bro.
like everyone says you should take out the rap, i think itlll be more powerful that way.
be safe out there.

I don't have a problem with the rap if it's used sparingly like this one... I did however find the shots if you a bit awkward flow-wise. I guess you can't really do anything about that when you're shooting yourself on the tripod.

-lighting. composition. camera movement.

-watch more movies.

this was really good. It would be a great film to watch if it was a bit longer...
the shots weren't bad at all. They were nice to watch.

i love the mood of the trailer
dont use the rap ... i liked when you sayed that manybe in the fututre you will change the world...nice touch..there is a potential to make it a feature long?

good job with the voice over :)

Its a excellent teaser. You have a real nice knack for combining your images with the mood you are going for. I love the music in the background, the guitar strums that is, but volume-wise it seems to be competing with your narration. I would tinker with the db settings in the edit. Other than that, you've got some real nice footage from some nice locations that I am sure will be the envy of many.

InternationalHov, are you listening!?

I think it was because nobody responded sooner. I think this thread was at the very bottom and no one made any comments. I figured he just completely left. I tried to ressurect the thread. Oh well, he had a cool little piece.

Sorry I didnt get back sooner, my responses

Sorry I didnt get back sooner, my responses

Thank you all for the input. Sorry I didnt respond sooner, I havent been able to get online.

This is a rough cut of the trailer. I've been traveling for several months so I havent really gotten to sit down do what exactly what I want, but this is close.

The rap lyrics I'm somewhat attached to: he's talking about living with the decisions he's made, which is exactly how i feel. Last year in school was hell, I hated it, and even now when I tell people 'I took a year off' they look at me like 'he's not focused', but this year has been pretty much a dream. But it may or may not fit, and I'm sure peole who are not into rap will find it out of place.

The audio needs to be redone. I recorded it on my Powerbook's internal Mic one night at 3AM. I still want to change the words, just a few minor things, and re-record with a shotgun Mic or in a studio.

I've shot over 20 hours of footage, and I selected some of the best, but there's stil alot I'd like to change/add, particularly of Africa.

The music is actually a song from the Motorcycle Diaries Soundtrack (which may need to be changed). I really connected with the movie Motorcycle Diaries because I am on a personal journey trying to figure out what I want to do with my life. Half of me would love to pursue the American dream, but the other half, who has seen immense poverty world-wide questions that dream.

I will be making a longer piece as soon as I settle down. I wanted the trailer to sort of establish a character, but in reality, I am the cameraman, so 90% of the footage doesnt have me in it, so it will be more of a documentary, but I'm hoping to tie in a narrative thread. One day my dream is to get funding to shoot my own Motorcycle Diaries feature narrative film based on this experience.

Thanks.

I think you've done a great job in keeping it real. The rap music puts who you are, where you are, and what we've become into perspective. I can see how making change in the world is important to you. It's is important to a lot of people. Get it done, and unleash your dreams.

Great job. I enjoyed the various cuts. I would keep the rap in- I think it gives it an intro - outro type feeling, and its used sparingly which is perfect- I would just fix the levels (as suggested before). I would also use a slower fade at the end- it's a little abrupt. But I do like the instrumental track in the background- it fits nicely.
