Army of Darkness (sweded)

OK, it's not high art or anything... but here in Fresno we've got our very own Sweded Film Festival (perhaps the first of its kind?). If you're unfamiliar with sweding, click here. Basically a swede is a low-budget recreation of a well-known movie, made popular by the Michel Gondry film "Be Kind Rewind."

We just held our 2nd festival today, and I decided to swede the trailer for "Army of Darkness" (aka. Evil Dead 3, aka. Bruce Campbell vs. the Army of Darkness), one of my most favoritest movies ever! Check it out at Vimeo here: http://tinyurl.com/aodswede

We've found that "sweding" is a good way to inspire grassroots filmmaking efforts in our fledgling film community here in Fresno. Basically anyone with a camcorder can make one! If people are curious, I could post up the other entries we got for the fest. And I'll def make the word known about Swede Fest 3, if anyone on DVXUser is interested in entering. Should be in March '09.

This is an interesting idea. It's not exactly fan films, but it's more about parody. I like the idea.

Would love to see more.

how far can you go in the reproduction of these scenes? by that I mean quality of acting and location/costumes/fx?

can a filmmaker try hard to emulate the look of a particular film? or do they expect a more "jokey" renditions

That's kind of up to the discretion of the filmmaker, there's no concrete rules. People who enter and consider themselves "non-filmmakers" generally don't worry too much about emulating the look, rather than just being comedic and having fun with it. The actual filmmakers who enter seem to find it a fun challenge to replicate shots/performances they best they can on a no-budget (the idea being... be creative, be innovative, use whatever you have lying around). But yeah, obviously the nature of 'spoof' or 'parody' does lend itself to comedy.
