Area 51 Question (DVX200HD)

I was just wondering if someone with good connections to Panasonic had some inside information on a dream DVX200HD or even a DVX200HDV with true 24p, true 16x9 and just a little better glass up front, 720p, pro audio, etc.

Just thinking out loud here.

Now if such person did have such information could they not leak such information as a guest.  Just a crazy thought I've been thinking about for a few days.

I'd rather wait until Feb for a new Panasonic than the Sony if I knew such a camera was coming.

Oh yes it it good record to a hard drive or card before it hit the dv tape and we'd just have use the tape as a back up, that would be cool too.

Re: Area 51 Question (DVX200HD)

A Panasonic Tech told me that we will "Probably" see a native 16:9 DVX a la xl2 and "Maybe" also a Compact HD camera by NAB 2005. The Pany HD will not be HDV because HDV does not support 24P. It will most liikely be 720 24P that will record on to Flash media like the SD Card. According to the tech the biggest limitation to HDV is the fixed bit rate because of the DV tape recording. A solid state memory solution could have a variable bit rate and thus a higher quality. ;)

Re: Area 51 Question (DVX200HD)

unless you had the equipment for it, HDV is way more of an investment than you realize. I don't care how fast it's getting here, not everyone will jump on it. the prices for HDV stations aren't gonna go down. it's another 2 years we're looking at just to catch up.
i could be wrong.

Re: Area 51 Question (DVX200HD)

You mean like lots of storage, monitors, etc.  Yes, I've thought about it a few times.

It'll be same with Juan's 4:4:4 DVX.  But the final output at a lower price (HD, 35mm) is what I'm thinking about.

Who knows Juan's might be the way to go. You get what you like about the DVX and you don't have to wait until 2006.

Juan's even talking about a HD output from his mode.

Re: Area 51 Question (DVX200HD)

I plan on being an Auteur who is still shooting in SD 24p long after HD has taken over. It'll be like the 16mm films of the 60's, or the Dogma films,...intentional production of "inferior" images.

That way I won't have to lay out all the cabbage for all of the components needed to shoot edit view deliver etc.

Re: Area 51 Question (DVX200HD)

...someone please correct me if im wrong here, but it is my current understanding that HDV uses pretty much the same bitrate as DV so storage shouldnt be a real issue. ..so assuming that all of our NLEs will soon be updated to make them HDV compatable, all you would really need would be the camera.       espescially if panny goes solid state memory.. then you could tranfser from the cam and never worry about head wear and would have no need for an editing deck.  of course you would need some way of delivering the HD content as well if you dont have a tape to record the final to, and  hand over.    but you could always take an export drive to a studio and have it transferred to HD if your delivering HD content... or hopefully HDDVD will be up and running soon.
..im really assuming that until HD is more prevelant people will mostly use the HDV for mastering, and they will output in SD formats such as DVD or DV, but film outs could come from a master HDV exported to some removeable storage like a hard drive.

Re: Area 51 Question (DVX200HD)

From the panasonic web site on the 800 P2 Cam

The P2 card far surpasses videotape and discs in reliability. It withstands shock up to 1,500 G and vibration up to 15 G, operates in temperatures from –4 to 140°F (–20 to 60°C), and can be stored in temperatures from –40 to 176°F (–40 to 80°C). And a card can be rewritten up to 100,000 times, with no degradation and no drop-outs.

We can only hope the next cam will have these cards, interchangeable lenses and the rest of the great features of our beloved 100

Re: Area 51 Question (DVX200HD)

so the card plugs into your computer via firewire and then functions like a lacie drive?

If you want to not just hope, but actually influence what features the next camera will have, make your thoughts known. Panasonic is one of the most attentive manufacturers, and I can attest that they do listen to the users and try their best to give us what we want.

There's obviously no guarantees, of course any feature requests are going to be evaluated by them to see how practical/cost-effective they'll be, but I believe Panasonic definitely pays attention to what we ask.

im pretty sure there will be (if it doesnt already exist) a "p2 card reader" for your NLe avaialbe to make it function like a drive if not exactly the same, but i would assume you could just leave the card in the cam, and transfer via firewire like an external firewire drive... some examples of things possible with the p2 cards which are currently implemented in another panasonic camcorder out now are :

PC Connection via Wireless LAN or USB 2.0 - Mount a wireless LAN card (optional) into the option card slot, and you can connect the P2 cam directly to a LAN. This is an extremely simple solution for live, on-air broadcast of proxy data 7 The AJ-SPX800 comes equipped with USB 2.0 interfaces that let you use the P2 card slot as an external drive for a PC. This gives you the flexibility to perform in-the-field nonlinear editing or network data transfers.

--granted i doubt that the pricepoint of cam were talking about will have all the wireless jazz, but im sure it will have firewire or usb2.0 functionality to run it like a drive straight from the cam, becauase there has to be a way to get the datat off the cam, and that is a very cheap and viable solution.

Re: Area 51 Question (DVX200HD)

wait wait wait...this is a bit OT, but in my readings i must have missed where it said HDV will not support TRUE 24p...is this a fact? Or is this a statement because the FX1 is not 24p???

Very curious mind wants to know. With a link for reference would be fantastic.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Area 51 Question (DVX200HD)

The truth is that the HDV format makes no provision for 24P.

The supported formats are:
1080/50i
1080/60i
720/25p
720/30p
720/60p

No provision for 24P.

Now, truth be told, DV doesn't have any provision for 24P either, but that didn't stop Panasonic from inventing a way to support it. And Canon followed suit. 24P could be implemented in 1080/60i the same way, and JVC has already announced plans to create a camera that does so.

So, is it confirmed or unknown whether the Z1 one will have true 24p? Or it will also only have the "cinframe" fake mode?

All this time I thought people kept cross talking the FX1 and Z1, so i never really paid a lot fo attention.

Re: Area 51 Question (DVX200HD)

The Z1 will not have any progressive modes. There's nothing "progressive-scan" about any of the Sony HDV offerings.

I've heard some reports that the Z1's C24 mode is very good, maybe it's doing it differently than the FX1 is. But however it's doing it, it's not true progressive scan. With that said, if it looks very good, I won't care whether it's "true" or not, just so long as the end result looks good.

Re: Area 51 Question (DVX200HD)

with the z1 you guys can just use the 25p and crop the additional lines for NTSC play.....

Re: Area 51 Question (DVX200HD)

Someone at DVInfo just posted something that looks like a translation from an official Z1 spec sheet, and it clearly states that CF24 and CF30 are "acquired at 60i".

There is no 24P on the FX1 or Z1. There is no 25P on the FX1 or Z1. There is no 30P on the FX1 or Z1.

The FX1 shoots only at 60i, ever. It can create an in-camera fake 24fps and fake 30fps look.

The Z1 shoots at 50i or 60i, and that's it. It can create an in-camera fake 24fps, fake 25fps, and fake 30fps look.

It remains to be tested as to how good those looks are. They may be very good, which would render the distinction between "fake" and "true" as irrelevant, as far as CF25. I've seen CF24 and not been too impressed, but I intend to take a much more thorough look at it next week.
