Are you satisfied with Britek

The Britek lights seemed to have jumped onto the scene a few months ago. The project I needed them for fell apart but I have something else in the works.

So those of you who have them, are you pleased with their performance? I am looking at 2 of the switchable 500/1000 watt soft boxes.

BTW, neither myself nor google can find their official homepage. Does anyone know what it is?

Re: Are you satisfied with Britek

Rostronics is a reseller for Britek, but they're not Britek themselves. Briteklight.com is one homepage for them, but it doesn't discuss the new light series that Rostronics is carrying. There are also some taiwanese sites for Britek out there...

Re: Are you satisfied with Britek

I don't think so (other than the ones that are in private hands, of course). DVXUser member gcaus got the two that were left in the Britek warehouse.

They've talked about firing up the production line again, but they'd need orders for something like 1000 units before they could justify it.

Re: Are you satisfied with Britek

so getting back to the original post........

Are you satisified with the Briteks?

Satisfied?

Satisfied?

No. I ran my 650 for ten minutes and the bulb burnt out. I sent Roastronics an email asking where to get a replacement and I still have not gotten a reply.
My answer is a resounding NO.

Re: Are you satisfied with Britek

did you touch the bulbs with your fingers? If you did, the oils from your fingers will heat up tremendously and may result in a blown bulb within minutes

Re: Are you satisfied with Britek

Nope. Never touched the bulb with my fingers until I had exhausted my troubleshooting options.
Basically, things went from opening the box, to plugging it in, to swithcing on, to burning out, to troubleshooting, to giving up and opening the light then realizing the bulb was kaput.

Re: Are you satisfied with Britek

i was about to buy a couple 650's and a 300 but it seems like nobody has anything really great to say about them... dissapointing  :-/

Re: Are you satisfied with Britek

A lot of people have said good things about 'em. I only have some 250's and the DayPhoto's, but I think they're great, very well done, very functional, and an absolute steal. I've used the 1K/softbox combo as well, they're excellent. I think Jarred shares this opinion.

I have no explanation for what happened to Augie, but I've had my Briteks for several months and I think they're an excellent, excellent value. Not full-fledged "professional" equipment (like Arri or Mole) but definitely "prosumer", plenty good enough for most jobs, and an amazingly inexpensive value.

Re: Are you satisfied with Britek

thanks for the reassurance Barry. i was getting hesitant since i noticed 120 views and no positive replies :P

Re: Are you satisfied with Britek

BTW... "Usually" if a bulb (lamp) goes bad from oil from your skin it will grow a 'blister' before going out. Also, it may not happen 'within minutes'.

Another thing that causes lamps to go bad is rough handling of the fixtures (usually in transit). The tiny, fragile tungsten wire that makes up the lamp's element can become broken from the bumping and bouncing often associated with usage and/or transporting and it may not even be visible to your eye.

It's a good practice to remove lamps from fixtures prior to shipping or extensive travel.

Re: Are you satisfied with Britek

Um, I use the new 650s and 200/250s all the time, actually I am pretty rough with them and the bulbs are still going and they are fantastic. They cool down really fast and the barndoors are better than the Arris. I have nothing but good to say about them... specially the 650s, they are one fantastic light.

Re: Are you satisfied with Britek

Thanks guys. Of course mixed input makes for mixed feelings with regard to a purchase.

Re: Are you satisfied with Britek

When you've got Barry and Jarred both behind a product, there's not too much to worry about. Now all we need is John to make a joke about them and we're all set.

Re: Are you satisfied with Britek

Hey, all props to Jarred, he found the lights and it was his endorsement that got me to try 'em. But I definitely agree, they're great little lights, and easily the best buy for the dollar out there. Other lights (like Kino Flo's) may be the SDX900 of lights, but these Briteks are the DVX100's of the light world -- inexpensive, and performing much better than they have a right to for the price charged for 'em! :)

Re: Are you satisfied with Britek

It looks like 250's and 650's are real popular sizes. Do they work well for lighting small to medium sized rooms? Maybe I should say lighting the people inside small to medium sized rooms? I don't want to buy 650's and find out I need more light but also don't want to buy 1,000's and not ever need that much power.

So far I use 500 watt Lowel Tota and Omni lights. With frost gel diffusion they are still blinding so I almost always just bounce them off silver umbrellas or foam board. How will a Britek 650 softbox compare to a Tota with gel facing directly at the talent and the Tota bounced off of foam board? Hopefully right in the middle where I need it.
