Are you a "soon to be former" Final Cut Pro User ???

Thank you for the information on ppbm5 I have looked at it and gotten some ideas but the chart is a little cryptic for me. I have been using Window for a long time. I use the Apple laptop for FCP, I did not get firewire for my current laptop because I figure I would be using tapeless camera and I do have plenty of tapes to edit. But I should be fine after I get the desktop before the end of this month.

I bet the last time you tried Windows was when that phone was a new model.

Things have changed since Windows moved to the NT kernel with XP

While for my own work I have a decided preference for Mac OS X and almost any form of unix/linux/bsd, I have had to work on Windows boxes, either just as 'tools', or actually write code that operated on them... I've not as yet had the 'pleasure' of the latest incarnation of Windows...

While not the ordinary 'users' problem, one of my 'biggest' problems with Window's anything (especially since NT), has been the lack of a 'good' command line interface. I think one still has to load up cygwin to get something of a useful shell...

Then there's the Registry... Even Apple dumped most of the resource fork wyrdness that seemed to be a 'good idea' way back when... ok... it is still there buried in HFS+... and perhaps topical for this FCP X discussion, may be one of the reasons why there was mention of incompatibility of FCP X with 'remote', and 'non-HFS+' file systems... one has to wonder... I can just hear some software engineer on the FCP X project say, "Oh, looky here we can use the Resource Fork to store metatag information about the video files... neeetoh...'.

Way more stable than vista for sure. Then again, I considered Vista the win7 beta. I had to switch from XP to vista when I went 64bit and quickly switched to win 7.

David the reason i gave you the PPbm5 was more to look at the spec of the PC like motherboards, ram, HDD, etc.... I used it as a reference to bliud a NLE. Over the years I had to use windows and pc due to budgets, I have been able to live with the problems and scounful finger piont from MAC/FCP users and yet thru this I have been able to earn more than some FCP owners ,making a good product with very happy customers at a more than half the price for the equipment. Windows7 is good and very stable and there are very good solutions for editing ,also very stable and cost effective at that. If I were a FCP7 opwner I would still stay with the product and uses it till i see that there is somthing far better out there , just because FPCX was launch why buy it . I think many of us fall into the trap ,as soon as something new is launch werun out and buy it and yet the question is do we really need it.Just my 2cent

Well, I'm at least starting to use Premiere for some projects... not sure if I'd call it a total switch just yet...

If were you , I would use both, if you are able to do something eazier or better do it in FCP or visa versa, FCP has some really nice features and both should compliment each other. , I did with Edius and PPRO CS5 ,each have there strengths and weakness.

Well, I'm at least starting to use Premiere for some projects... not sure if I'd call it a total switch just yet...

I used Final Cut Express for years, even after getting CS3 Premiere. I've had After Effects since version 5, and was ok with using FCE for my live video, and AE for 'effects'... like it was supposed to be.

However, with CS5 and my getting the GH-1, and further pretty much standarizing my frame rate to 24 fps... FCE was showing its age and limitations...

A short while ago I asked on the Apple FCE forum about how to export my FCE projects in XML, and the answer was 'no, not possible, no 3rd party widgets', and to the question, 'will there be an FCE 5'... the answer was 'expect great and wonderful things in FCP X'... well, the only thing great and wonder full in my mind about FCP X at this point is the question, "what on earth were the folks at Apple thinking?"...

I personally would have paid $300 for a 'translation utility' called FCP X, to move my old projects from FCE to XML to Premiere. Heck last year I bought about $200 worth of Sony 3/4 inch U-matic machines, 2 in fact, one working, one for 'spare parts' if needed, to move some really old projects in to the modern digital age...

I can't imagine that there is a complete lack of that sort of need in the 'full time professional' world... but who knows... perhaps most 'pros' sort of dispatch 'old stuff' to the dust bin as soon as the client's check clears the bank...

About to be a former FCP user. Just trying to track down an Nvidia GTX285 because I REEEEEALLY don't want to spend $800 on a quadro.

Ugh...! I hate FCP but I recently did a 30 minute project on Premiere. Premiere is a disaster for longer projects. I guess it is back to Avid.

Yes, I have almost completed my change over from FCP7 to CS5.5.
When the true nature of FCPX was exposed, and I recovered from my
initial shock, I down loaded a trial version of CS5.5 to see if I could
in fact transfer my FCP projects to CS5.5. Well it turns out I can and
it’s fairly easy. So after I finished the projects that were started on FCP
all new projects were started in CS5.5. We have had to go back to some
old FCP projects for client updates and all worked fine. True, I do miss
some things on FCP but I enjoy some things on CS%.5 that I didn’t have
on FCP. It was hard to say good by to FCP but business is business.

I tried... really I did... but have ended up sticking with FCP7. While Premiere addresses some of the deficiencies in my FCP7 workflow, it adds many others, and in the end FCP7 is faster, easier, and yields consistently better results. Rrrrrgh. All I want is native AVCHD in FCP7 and it will be perfect. (Don't tell me about the Panny plugin... it DOES NOT WORK for longform work Rrrrgh.)

Do you have any advice for those of us suffering with FCP7's gamma shifting issues with QT?

Me? Advice? Gamma? No... I do everything (except audio) in Final Cut Studio apps, and have no trouble...

I must say, after a few months experience on FCP X for the most part I love it. Except for the damn magnetic timeline, which is a solution to a problem that didn't exist and is just HORRIBLE. Of course monitoring is an issue but I expect they'll solve that soon.

If they would make it where you could switch off the magnetic timeline I would use FCPX, if not no go. And to answer the other guy about Monsters, I have used Premiere in the real world on a long complicated project the problems are ridiculous, unable to locate clips, taking forever to do simple tasks etc, etc, etc...

It's a sow's ear. I don't believe the magnetic timeline offers any real advantages, and if they had kept the old timeline with all the fantastic new advantages: performance, scrubbing, one viewer window, clip cataloguing and keywording etc. they could also have made it possible to import FCP7 projects. It's a real shame, and they've shot themselves in the foot in a big way.

I've been learning FCPX (tougher than I thought it would be, coming from FCP7) but am very tempted by the 30% off Adobe upgrade available through midnight tonight. To get the full CS5.5 Production Premium, it's only $450 (from CS4 Production Premium)!!! I'm likely to pull the trigger anyway just to upgrade After Effects but just might start dabbling in PP too.
