Are we getting 24p on the 5DII ?

No speculation, Canon already said they are not going to release a 24p firmware upgrade for the mkii, wait for the mkiii or buy a 7D if you want a 24p Canon vdslr.

Really?

I was under the impression it had been beta tested and was now 'on hold'.

I think they'll let the 7D hog the 24p lime light until Christmas and then release the update for the 5D in January. After all, they added manual controls and it IS still their flagship consumer level camera, above the 5D in image quality.

Then again, I hear it makes jello worse. I am also not too bothered if we don't get the 24p update as 30p doesn't look too bad in my view. It can look very real and life-like. Cinematic 'feel' comes 90% from other aspects, even sound, in my opinion. 30p is not totally horribly smooth like 60i video, I feel it is underrated and discriminated against simply because it's a pain to edit together with footage from other cameras and it's got a crap name. 24p will always sound more 'cinema' than 30p - the modern impostor.

The new 3D generation of films will be shot in 48p or 60p or maybe even higher. Will we view them as 'not cinematic'? I don't think so.

30p movement is close to interlaced footage and this looks amateur no matter how hard you try, only dof helps here and sometimes 30p doesnt look that bad in DSLR's,just look at this, looks ok:

30p with dof can look quite filmic but most of the time its too smooth and interlaced like looking.

Where canon said NO 24P for 5D mark II ?

"New generation of films" ? Wow where did you get this, films will be 23.976 cause its associated with films and it will stay like that.

You DO know that there are films shot in 30p right?

Yes, the cam had sooo much jello in 24p they decided not to release it, it was really bad from what I was told. You will have to wait and buy the next model 5diii or whatever it is they call it.

No 24p firmware from Canon coming to the 5dii.

A frame rate does not on it's own define 'amateurish' film making.

ChipG I am interested in your views so gonna press you for more info... where did you hear the news?

From not one but several people who have talked to high up Canon rep's and other corporate Canon execs.

Why do you think they are going to release a 24p update? Why would they want to cut into their sales on the next model that will have it? It's financial suicide for them to do that. Doing what customers consider the right thing is not always the best thing for the company. They will make you buy the next model 5diii to get 24p.

The old Iron Man II thread, ha ha ha. I'd be willing to bet that it was a prototype 7d that was on set of Iron Man II and not a 5dii with 24p. They look almost exactly alike and a 5dii sticker can be put on a 7d in about 2 seconds. The jello is so bad in 24p on the 5dii (from what I am told) that there is noooo way Canon would ever let one wind up on a major feature movie set let alone a low budget indie feature.

I heard that too but its pure bulls**t because they released 500D with even less frames (20) and HUGE jello problems ,so they didnt had problems with giving not useable 20p in cheaper model but they didnt even wanted to do it for 4 times more expensive one, this is very poor excuse of canon and i dont believe this at all.
Just release firmware update canon and let us decide if its useable or not because you decided that 20p is useable enough to put it in 500D.

You DO know that there are films shot in 30p right?
Thats cool can i have the Title please ? Im very curious how it looks like if shot on film.

Prototype 7D on Ironman set is plausible. Okay, lets give up hope for 24p on the 5D. It's 30p is fine anyway. Sometimes I even swear it's better than 24p.

You guys justify it how ever you want, there is no 24p firmware update comming from Canon for the 5dii. Sell your cam now before there is a flood of them on the market if you want 24p and buy the 7d or wait for the next 5diii that will have it. Even if the 24p update was out it would only look good with the camera locked down, no motion from it, handheld would make very, very bad jello images.

I could live with 30p, it looks awesome on the 5dii!

Haha. I moved from the GH1 partly because Panasonic didn't fix the codec issues with a firmware update, and now the 5D isn't getting 24p. I think I may have cursed it. Sorry about that.

But yeah, 30p is nowhere near the same level of concern for me as a bad codec is. (Or rather, for sake of being accurate, the GH1 has a good codec, AVCHD, handled with underpowered hardware designed for processing stills).

I want someone to shoe me a well done 5d II video that suffers from no 24p. And don't show me Stu's subway short because it was not hot.

I read the threads about calling or emailing Panasonic to request a higher bitrate for the GH1, I laughed, at $800ish for the body Panny will make you buy the future GH2.

For those that think these camera manufactures are in a hurry to spend R&D money on an existing product only to hurt sales of their future models, you are mistaken. Buy nice glass and swap out bodies every year.
