are we all filmmakers now?

I was in Best Buy and some grandma was being shown hd consumer cameras
by a teenage employee. She asked, "does this one have the 24p thing?"

I wanted to faint. Will the Canon hv30's, hv40's and Canon t2i's make everyone
think they are on the same level with Spielberg, Tarantino or Rodriquez?

God Help Us if it does!

But think of all the talent that WILL be realized because of this shift? Some of the best directors from the next gen will probably owe a debt of gratitude to the advancement in affordable camera gear.

24p actually slows down the progress. Instead of getting used to 50p/60p look and shooting perfectly fluid stuff people are chained -- voluntarily! -- to a century-old crusty standard. This is sad.

The TM700 and the likes with 1080p60 will really bring advancement, not 24p-enabled cameras. Now if only broadcast adopted 1080p.

I can acquire the tools many of the great artisans used over the last thousand years easily but that in no way shape or form gives me their ability. What you whitnessed was the effects of marketing, not an artist asking for a specific tool.

This is going to derail this thread completely.

I would not be a shooter if I had to work in film.

[Ignore] Cranky [/Ignore] Oh sorry, I meant to hit the button and not this post.

I'd actually be interested in films made by grandmas. You combine a lifetime of experience with film tools, could be pretty interesting.

if granny wants to encroach on my turf, she best be ready to bring it. there are consequences for this kind of thing and she needs to know that i'm not afraid to pimp slap a grandma. let's do this!

Yea, Its all fun and games till granny asks why (and how) the pictures are in color. She will procede to tell you she has never seen such a thing; that her BW set has rabbit ears and hasent recieved a signal in about a year.

I can picture it now: 24MPH car-chase scenes, cane-fights instead of sword-fights, and an intermission every 20 minutes.

That does it -- next DVXFest is now officially "GrannyFest". Must be at least 80 years old, and a grandma, to enter.

This should rock.

someone needs to make this movie. it could be done as a light hearted comedy. an elderly lady in a nursing home gets a camera from her grandson. see how it changes her life and the lives of people at the nursing home.

Wow, yeah, that 24p thing sure has been a big failure with the consumers, hasn't it?
It was a pure technical decision, with which modern TV systems have to cope with different pulldown solutions, and viewers have to cope with strobing. Instead of pushing archaic 24fps into 21st century more energy has to be directed in devising a single universal frame rate for video and movies, or maybe a set of rates that convert more gracefully into each other.

24p is still used largely because it can be converted rather easily into 50 and 60 fps. Aside of that, why on Planet Earth one would shoot a wildlife documentary in HD in stroby 24p? I bet James Cameron would never do that. Um, at least I hope so.

</sarcasm>
Nothing ruins a joke more than a "j.k." note. BTW, you forgot the opening tag.
