Are there any reccommended shutter speeds for fast action?

I shot some dirt bikes over the weekend with a few guys and one was bumping up his shutter speed. The video was shot at 1080/30p, and I'm just wondering if there's a better way to shoot fast action. I left the shutter at the default setting.

I shoot motorcycles, I do allot of close up panning and get good results at 250 shutter and always use 720p 60fps. I use the ND filter to keep the Aperture around 4-5.6

250 will motion blur the background a bit for my subjects at speeds about 45mph. it also will give fairly sharp slowmo in case of a crash.
If you go too high with shutter when panning you get strobing.
