are there any reason NOT to buy a 5D?

reasons...sorry.

I am about to pull the trigger and grab one of these. The images I have been seeing are simply stunning.

1.The sound issue seems like an easy fix

2.the 30P to 24P conversion does not SEEM that hard to accomplish.
3.I use a lot of 60FPS with my HVX/LEX and that would be the only major issue with me. and how could you achieve this with the MKII?
4.My clients don't care about the spectacle factor.

For the money it just looks great. I just don't see a reason not to buy it. I have a monitor, shoulder mount, FF etc. I know I need to grab a few things to rig it up but I am really thinking about ditching my 17 pound rig and going with the 5D.

Not really! Except.........

LOL @ PappasArts

@ filthrich

Maybe consider GH1 @ 720/60fps. They sell a Nikon mount for your glass. If you can live with out60p, roll with 5DMKII.

Cheers.

Aliasing is the biggest and one of the least talked about problems. Take this camera into NYC or similar and see the results of the cars/buildings/anything with sharp edges

mud mud glorious mud......I can say it here, not allowed in the GH1 fanrum

I'm considering one of these as well. Just how bad is the anti aliasing? Is there any kind of post fix for it?

Thanks

Not as bad as some make it out to be. However I would like to see it reduced much more. It's funny to see the aliasing discussion here and then the same over in a private board that discusses cinematography how Panavision Genesis aliasing issues that creep up from time to time on sets and wardrobe.

There are anti aliasing filters that can reduced the appearance. I don't know them off the top of my head, however others here have used them on H1, D90 and other camera footage.

.

The form factor and function are very awkward for a video person. And you get this tendancy to want to take stills all the time. I've come back from every shoot with these aggravating still pictures... it's a hassle.

  1. If you need to record long takes at a time.
  2. If you anticipate rolling shutter distortion to be a problem. (rally racing, drinking too much coffee, ...)
  3. If you depend on specific delivery formats.
  4. If you anticipate yourself shooting in conditions where aliasing becomes a real problem (very high frequency patterns, resolution charts, harsh diagonal edges)
  5. If you need to capture high quality audio directly to camera
  6. If you depend on autofocus

Aliasing has never been a problem for me... The camera looks absolutely horrible shooting a resolution chart, but that is a lab test... the worst case scenario, and not a condition that you are likely to encounter in practice. I won't tell you not to worry about it, you should... You are not helpless, there are a few things you can do to avoid aliasing and get the shot even in difficult conditions. Just be cautious. Test the camera, see if it is right for you.

If you want a video camera, my advice is for you to buy a real video camera. You are gambling with these hybrids, but IMO the odds are in your favor. :)

Funny stuff Bill. I've also discovered that you can turn the camera 45 degrees and actually shoot stills with a portrait orientation. All jokes aside I do (as a video guy) have to remind myself that you don't have to only take pictures in landscape. Who knew. This still stuff is wild.

The Tiffen Soft #2 has been recommended for shooting around 50mm. I haven't actually seen any tests done to see how well this can overcome the aliasing. Has anyone tried it?

I would say a few things you might think about before buying are aliasing, record time and 30p.
In reality only record time is something you cant get around pretty much, the rest are workable for sure.
oh and ya money ... its not cheap
its so worth it though:)

Yeah very expensive camera - very hard to hand hold or follow focus

That means you need to hire a puller and use the best heavy support which slows down your shoot and means you need to hire a grip to handle your support, because your shoot is slow your talent is hired for longer too

But youve got an adapter so you now all about that

Very very expensive

I think I will rent one for a weekend and see if it's right for me. A lot of the major issues don't seem to be that major. I have a nice HVX setup (see sig.) and I aint ready to let the old dirty bastard go yet. If I have both and the ODB starts collecting dust then I will sell it.

if you are used to lugging all that stuff round youll be fine personally Im hating adapters more and more

the 5d rocks for 'cinematography' (many people) and is very challenging for 'videography' (one person)

I don't understand how people call this a very expensive camera. I mean, what is expensive is always relative.. Good video cameras are never cheap.. Here are some "expensive" cameras:

HMC150: ~$3,600
HVX200: ~$5,600
EX1: ~$6,000
EX3: ~$8,400
HPX170: ~$7,000

5D Mark II + lens: ~$3,200

Expensive? Looks cheap to me...

We are only a two man team currently working on our 3rd feature. I would be using for features, shorts and the occasional music video. But feature films primarily.

Honestly I'm nervous about giving up the HVX/LEX combo for a full 5D setup. And I, like you are begining to dislike adapters. My Extreme is just a Pain in the ass now. I run naked more and more. (camera, not me:beer:)

And I have to agree that it's not expensive when compared to almost 6 grand. Damn bargain for the image you get.

When I am doing videography stuff I use my 28-135 IS lens and strap a H4N to the shoe mount on top, using the built in mics or externals as well depending on shoot.

I guess it slightly sucks to press record for audio and video, but saying that is very challenging is a slight overstatement in my opinion. I don't find it much more difficult than shooting a video camera if you have a zoom with IS, a prime without can be annoying.

I can better that.

5DMII: $2,625 after taxes... Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II at B&H $99.00 bucks or 50 bucks on craigslist..

$2,725 or 2,675 if you go for the used lens....

That 50mm is about a 30mm FOV when shooting an S35 film production. Plenty good to make a movie etc for people who are wannabes, unknowns or simply an avergage joe who dreams to be the next Spielberg, Kubrick or any known filmmaker....

That's far better tools than our predecessors ever had to start out with making short films or the indie world had for only 2,700 bucks in the past.
