Are my understandings correct?

Hello all,

I am new to this forum and would like to say thanks to all of the brilliant minds that interact here.

I am just looking for feedback to either validate or point out misconceptions that I might have about how the HVX200 records formats. From what I have gathered, here is the rundown of it's functionality that I currently have in my head.

The tape transport drive records to DV only and can be used for SD DV only (in either 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio)

The P2 functionality allows for recording of DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO-HD, but not to tape - only to disk (whether it be P2 flash cards or hard drive alternatives)

Recording from firewire output does not allow capturing of DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO-HD - only SD. However you can transfer DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO-HD files to hard drive utilizing the firewire output.

DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO-HD footage that is on P2 media can be down converted in camera to SD DV.

No footage can be up converted or "up-rezed" in camera.

.. so did I get it all right or am I smoking bananas on some of this info? :)

Clarifications and additions:

1) You can dub from the DVCPROHD from the P2 to the DV tape in the camera, down-rezzing on the way. So that means undercranking and overcranking available in 720pN format can be used and then copied to 16x9 DV for SD use.

2) P2 recording enables all 13 formats, including DV and DVCPRO in 480i.

3) You can stream almost anything over Firewire to a computer and capture it in your editor. The exception is 720pN. Because native mode does not create fill frames it doesn't conform to the timing requirements for streaming. So you have to record 720pN to P2 first, and then work with the resulting file.

4) There are *many* ways to get a file recorded from P2 into your computer. The camera can be set in "device mode" and show up as a pair of hard disks on the desktop. The P2 card can be put into a slot on a computer and with the correct driiver, the computer can read the files. The files can be played back over firewire and captured as with traditional tape capture.

Thanks for the additional info! It really helps in getting a solid grasp on what this camcorder has to offer.

.... this only refers to 720pN at 24fps right? Not 30?

The HVX doesn't output stream at the 1394 during any native recording -- 24pN or 30pN. It also doesn't output the stream to the 1394 when you are using one-shot or loop recording. All these modes introduce delays between the time that frames are recorded. The firewire transport needs consistent timing between frames to maintain the timing of its stream.
