Are frame rates relevant?

no idea

I would like to start shooting video, on DSLR, and I haven't decided yet whether to buy a Canon or a Nikon. I have a very slight inclination towards Nikon, but:

I understand that Nikon's DSLRs only offer exactly 24 frames per second, while the commonly used video frame rates are 23.976, 25, or 29.97 fps.

Am I correct here? And would this be a problem in case I want to synchronize the pictures with (separately recorded) sounds afterwards?

In other words: Could the frame rates alone be a reason that Canon's 7D seems to generate so much more interest than the video-enabled DSLRs from Nikon?

TIA :)

Get a 7D, GH1, 5D (with firmware update) or T2i. If want to go the DSLR route to shoot films.

And yes framerates are relevant. 24p is pretty much the reason this site exists.

Yes and no. For web work, you can use whatever framerate you want. Audio will sync up fine at any of those framerates. However, if you want to go to DVD or blueray and you have 24fps content, you'll need to slow it down to 23.97 and the audio by the same amount. Its not hard but if you're just authoring for the web it doesn't matter.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean: Are you saying I Should avoid the Nikon because it can't do 23.976 fps, and the difference between 24 and 23.976 is the reason why this site exists?

Here I'm not sure either. Does it probably boil down to this: If the Nikon does indeed record with exactly 24fps, and I want to do DVD authoring, then I would need to slow down the audio by .1% in order to sync up with the pictures?

Thanks again :)

Yes. When you slow down 24fps, you're not actually throwing away any frames, just re-interpreting the whole thing at a new framerate which is non destructive. And the audio needs to be adjusted by .1% like you said.

Again, for the web, it doesn't matter.
