GH2 Are all these new hacks and patches creating a placebo effect?

I hope that this little improvise test will show to people that it is not a placebo thing. I don't criticize people that want to use the stock footage, the stock gh2 is already very sharp at least for static/not much motion shots. For my personal use, I won't use it when I have the hacked footage like the cbradin 44 mbits that is already much better for just a little bit higher storage space. In fact perhaps the biggest qualitative jump is from the stock to the 44 mbit. After that you have the high to medium gop 1 hack which have other level of quality (with diminishing returns) but also other qualities. As I said before anyone can choose not to use the hack, but on the other side don't tell we what I am seeing or not, it brings some sensible quality enhancement and as this... test showed, the hack is definitely no placebo to my eyes. I can clearly see the degradation in quality from the stock image.

I totally agree with you. The hack has tremendous advantages. Actually I don’t think anyone is questioning whether the hack does anything at all. For instance I don’t think there is anyone who would be using the stock v1.1 firmware right now if it was hacked.

The new firmware in stock form does have some significant improvements though. The questions that I wanted to answer are what exactly does the hack do and are those improvements more significant than the better AF and noise reduction in v1.1.

For me the better AF was enough on its own. I shoot in low light with very fast lenses so high ISO is not an issue. In addition I have a slow card(Eye-Fi) that I use so I can’t reliably use higher bit rate hacks. However, I wanted to be able to reliably shoot in AFC for video. The v1.1 firmware gives me that ability.

I sincerely hope that the v1.1 firmware gets hacked soon. Then everyone won’t have to make the choice between stock or hacked. They will be able to get all of the new features and still be able to choose the hack settings that suits their needs the best.

If you can improve the tools you use to tell your stories then I'm all for it.
But remember... There's nothing worse than a high resolution image of a fuzzy concept.

All the Best!

Dave
