Are adaptors obsolete?

to answer the original question, NO they are not dead at all. Just because there is hype over some stupid cameras that can shoot shallow DOF for 12 mins only, doesn't mean they come anywhere NEAR an F900r or Varicam with a 35Pro on it. Come on get real. DOF adapters are here to stay for a long time, especially when 1/3'' cameras are still being made.

The Scarlet I'm sure will be great, but a 2/3 sensor is not full frame 35 - heck, with an adapter you can zoom out (cheat the lens a bit) and get MORE than FF35.

Here's a weird artifact of alising we saw with a 5D shoot we did - one of the things that sold us on getting a Redrock Me2 for our EX1. We filmed a guy with a grey beard, and when we looked at the footage, his beard looked thicker/longer than reality AND had some rainbow moire in it. I've seen moire on water, I've even seen moire in the lines/wrinkles in a subject's forehead. To say that a 5D/7D/Gh1 replaces a good cam + good adapter is to have some mighty low standards. or some mighty low sights where you estimate that all of what you do will only end up on the web, never in theatres or on TV.

The reason that so many people think a 5D replaces adapters plus good vid cams is that the 5D is so cheap many people who own it have no film traning or expertise - they don't know what they're doing and what they're doing is very, very low-end. Then these people with no knowledge go on forums saying they have a Red killer. The 5D is no Red killer and no adapter killer.

I can fix 30p to 24 in post most of time, but what plugin can I use to thin a guy's beard?

Well i just looked at the charts again on a bigger monitor ( looked before on my laptop) and there are a few problems.

First be aware that the Letus test was shot with a Letus 35 not an Extreme or Ultimate and as I understand it the Letus 35 is an older generation and not of the same optical quality as the others. Please correct me if I'm wrong. It does look much softer than other tests I've done with an Extreme or an Ultimate.

Second the D90 and Canon charts are switched . I saw the moire in what I thought was the Canon and was stunned, but actually that's the D90. The Canon chart looks pretty damn sharp.
I assume the actual chart labels are correct.

That brings up a question I asked Barry about his post reviewing DSLR sharpness issues.
He posted a generic shot of a DSLR's moire on a chart. Well a generic DSLR doesn't mean anything to me. I need to see a specific camera. Here you can see that the Canon seems to outperform the D90 on the resolution front at least.

Film is better than digital.
CD is better than MP3.
DoF adptr is better than full-frame dslr.

Hey Barry,

That Red announcement today sure was a game changer!
I'm selling everything to get in line for ummm... when was that BETA camera due.. well, when's the next announcement anyway?

Lenny Levy

Yeah, not quite what we were expecting... oh well, another announcement date a month in the future, and until then we'll just keep shooting on what we've already got. :)

I'm relived to hear these assessments because a few days ago I thought there was some untold secret out there about adaptor rigs caving in to DSLR cameras. It appears the demise of adaptor rigs has been greatly exagerated.

As for the Scarlett, these Red people should get first prize for announcements... anybody can do the same... show up at an expo with a square box, claim it is revolutionary, take pre-ordrers and come back five years later with plug in announcements... By the time the camera has all its plug ins it's a decade later and you've spent 10 times as much as the initial announcement price.... I will believe the Scarlett when I see it's pricetag and the legth of the waiting list.

Yeah, it's not available, and their is a four tiered waiting line when it actually becomes a reality....I don't believe the "adapters are dead" line for a second. Sure things can change, but it won't be in the next 6 months, so I for one am not going to sell my adapter and HVX-200 to sit around and wait for something.

The 7D's form factor is MASSIVE compared to the GH1. The 7D is the "heavy D" of that relationship. The GH1 is the stealth CRX, the 7D is the semi trailer. I was showing my wife the first still pictures I'd taken and she said (and I quote): "whose ginormous camera is this?" (uh-oh, perhaps I forgot to tell her I ordered it... :)

you think the 7d is ginourmous?
