Archos and P2 cards?

Do you think it will be possible to plug the P2 card reader into an archos AV500 (for example) and transfer the files directly without any PC? because archos can be a nice storage tool ....
seen on their website: "The AV 500 has a USB Host Port enabling you to copy, share, connect and transfer files directly from other powered mass storage devices. additionaly, the AV 500 is recognized as a mass storage drive on your PC or Mac enabling you to store any computer files using the high-speed USB 2.0 interface (backward USB 1.1 compatible at a lower speed)".
thanx

Delaro,

I'm not sure that Archos products are available through in the whole world.
It remains a french company.

Even if they're doing great products. My brother bought an AV420. Just perfect.

It could be great to know that we can use an Archos.

i just bought the av500, it s a crazy product!! "perfect" is the word ..... and if it can store P2 contents, there is no word ....

I totally share your opinion :)

(Si c'est le cas, je vais lui faire un coup à la gérard majax à l'Archos de mon frère !! )

Well now, what an interesting idea!

100 gb for $700 retail. Plus it functions as a portable entertainment center for when you have to fly cross-country, etc...

They also have the AV 700, with 100gb for $800 retail and a big 7" screen.

Neither has a firewire port, so the HVX couldn't automatically offload P2 cards to it as if it was an external drive -- however, that may not matter, because the Archos apparently offers host mode with its USB2 port, so possibly the Archos could serve as the host, seeing the HVX/P2 cards as an external hard disk.

i confirm, it s working very well with card readers, the screen is better than a psp screen (just perfect), u can record directly from a dvd player, tv, and whatever, record sound, ..... the av700 is older than the av500 (better screen for the last one). i agree barry, i think it could be a cheap and nice solution for the hvx

i found a problem with that system. the host mode is usb apparently, not usb2. the usb2 is to plug it to the the computer. therre is 2 different ports. so, is it possible to transfer the 4gb of a p2 card using simple USB?

Well if it isn't, someone should get onto them and tell then there would be litterally hundreds of people queuing up to buy one of their 100GB AV500's if they could make it store P2 cards!

I own a AV480, and it's a great little device... when it's working. I bought it primarily for the exact same function you're discussing... it has a CompactFlash slot so I could offload photos when my cards got full and keep shooting on location.

Unfortunately, I am now on my THIRD device. The first two just starting acting eratically and then stopped working entirely. Both times I lost all my data. If it happens again, I may have to declare a blood feud on Archos.

But for now, it's working. And it is nice.

Also, huge WTF? on the design of that AV500 pictured. Looks like they took several steps backwards in terms of interface design.

it will fit perfectly with the hvx200 ....
but what do u prefer? a bad design but lot of functionalities like archos or the "nice" ipod video (which permits to view movies at the crazy size of 320x260 on a tv screen, or use the stamp size screen they offer u).
i m a mac addict for years but my computer and peripherals look more and more like my little sister make-up-boxes.
i like this archos comunist design, it looks .... punk

Bad design and functionality are not independent or exclusive, is the thing. Looking at that AV500 image, it just seems really unnecessary. Good design should be transparent. Apple is fairly good at accomplishing that. And, I totally disagree that it fits in with the HVX. If anything it fits in with Apple, who quite some time ago decided (correctly) that the brushed steel look was over with.

Bad...good...design in a piece like this?! Good Lord!...

And about USB 2.0, any confirmation?...

Looks like the 700 is USB 2.0:

It has to be USB 2.0 for a 100 GB drive. It would take ages to transfer any subtantial amount of movie or music files to it with an old standard USB connection.
...Interface: USB 2.0...so, have we machine!?...

...or?

don't want to poo poo any thoughts, but i think the transfer of the data from the P2 card must be some type of hard drive that has some panny software interface at some level. i know the small 60gig unit they were showing at NAB had some type of interface to it. not for sure but barry would be much more informed.
