Aputure COB 120t First Look. Tungsten 1.5K watt equivalent one source LED fixture

A 400W HMI equivalent LED would, assuming no fundamental advances, need to be roughly a 400W LED.

As HMI is roughly 4x as efficient as tungsten... you're probably right... although a Jab Hurricane is 187w and very nearly matches an 800... so...? Maybe that only applies to a COB design(?)

That's why I said the world would beat a path to Aputure's door if they could make a 400w HMI equivalent... but yeah... you're probably right, that it's highly unlikely. Unfortunately the Jab's have a poor TLCI... but at least for news... it doesn't even matter... the raw horsepower of the light is what makes the shot. I can't stress this enough... they are STUNNING to behold (at night)... in the day, competing with Mr. Sun... it takes stupid power. The least you want is roughly an 800w HMI... so the Jab works... but for NBC Nightly... there were TWO of the BIG Aadyntechs... the ones that make even the Hurricane look small.

So anyway... you make a good point about HMI... but my frustration about specs is still peaking... as the claims are so stupid high right now, and they don't have to be... it's like they're aiming these pitches at people who have zero experience with set lighting. Do you have an Arri 650w or similar? I'd love to hear what you see putting them side-by-side... even if you opened the glass (as if you were going to replace it) and compared a raw bulb to raw LED (w/o reflector). I have an Arrilite sitting on a shelf... as well as a few 300w Arris... totas, etc. I can't wait to dump all this tungsten... but now I have to wait until I can do some comparisons, just to see how far off the new light claims are. I WANT them to be awesome... but making statements that miss by HALF? Jeez... are they even testing these claims?

Anyhoo, I have the light and it's pretty bright, and nicely built. Completely unscientifically it will replace my 650w tungsten fixture on jobs, while not being quite as bright as it.

Thinking about getting a Bowens Spot attachment for gobos and the like...

By 800, I assume you mean an 800W HMI. This could only be the case assuming very different optical engineering in the two devices. Comparing the output of a (flexible but highly inefficient) ellipsoidal with an (efficient but fundamentally fixed-behaviour) PAR would make the PAR look far more efficient even if they both used the same light source.

Current HMI and LED (and fluorescent) have more or less the same luminous efficacy, with LED perhaps beginning to slide very slightly ahead in some cases. Most observable differences will be caused by the different optical behaviour of the devices in which these light sources are used. There are often very considerable differences, after all, because an HMI is a (roughly) spherical radiator which requires a reflector, whereas an LED chip has a complex emission pattern which needs to be handled, in the first instance, by the module into which it's built, and then by the lamphouse of the final device. It's very difficult to make absolute comparisons.

Now, that's not to say that in some cases the way an LED behaves might not actually be better for specific applications, and it might be reasonable to describe the LED as more efficient in that case even if it doesn't actually push out any more photons per watt than an HMI. Fundamentally, though, there is no significant efficiency offset. #

There are some fairly specific things LED has enabled - efficient tungsten-balanced light, for one. Filtering an HMI to tungsten is inefficient. Tungsten itself is very inefficient. Tungsten LED is much more efficient than either approach. Otherwise, though, if you want hard daylight there's HMI, or if you want soft light, either tungsten or daylight, there's fluorescent, and both of these technologies have existed for decades.

You can claim some unique benefits for LED, such as physical toughness, but overall
the idea that LED has changed the world is misguided. The availability of lots of low-cost lighting options has more to do with the rather abrupt emergence of a surge in low-end filmmaking, perhaps provoked by DSLR video, than anything else.

And yes, ludicrous claims are irritating, but at least they're usually pretty identifiable.

I don't know about "unique", but as I see it, there is more to the popularity of LEDs - "physical toughness" is not so much an advantage of LEDs, but more the fact that fluorescents are actively fragile, tungsten/hmi is extremely hot, which makes LEDs easier to handle, and above all else - at least from my point of view - the biggest reason I like LEDs is that I can have them battery operated and not have to rely on generators or the mains. Now, with some of the more powerful LEDs the "battery" solutions are approaching the impractical and certainly very costly - and arguably are equally available at that level for fluorescents - but I think for most indie shooters the lower end of LEDs (even the on-camera small ones) are attractive because of how portable they are - tougher than fluorescents and battery powered. And LEDs are still in their rapid development stage where you can see more progress on the horizon, whereas nobody thinks that fluorescents or incandescents tungsten or HMI or whatnot is still developing much. LEDs are the future (at least for now, until something better comes along). YMMV.

I bought some LitePanel Inca's off eBay... they arrived today. Supposed to be 650w Arri equivalents... well... as I feared... they are 300w Arri equivalents... better in some areas, worse in others, and BIG CASE... plus fans... *ugh*... disappointed. I was hoping they'd be somewhere between the 300 and 650... nope... plus... pinkish halo.

I would say the unique benefit of LED lighting is bulb cost going away as a factor. Most COB are rated for 40-50000 hours operating time, if you compare to say a 2.5k HMI, you would need to swap bulbs up to 100 times. Even if we take half of that, that is 10000$ saving on an equivalent LED.

ofc, there aren't too many equivalent LEDs atm. I'm working on an LED array with 1000W power (not 1k equivalent, 1k real), I'll post it when it's done, should be pretty bright.

Rob... That's one of the things about life in general that discourages me. If one company tells the truth, and shows a lower spec... it would probably help the competition that's fudging the numbers. STILL... this has to start somewhere. I feel like we had a bit of a revolution with audio back in the day... and I'm annoyed at the universal BS on lighting right now. But the great thing about lighting is at least with power, it's not subjective.

I'm fairly happy with TLCI as an evolution of CRI... although I'm not that obsessed with the color, as I think there is room for opinions. A Kino 400 in tungsten has HORRIBLE TLCI, but I've seen so many great looking shots using a Diva... (it's pink, even to the naked eye)... and a lot of the "look how great the color is on this led" shots... still have a slightly fake (cheap) look to me. Whatever... I can live with that, as I only shoot as a hobby... and occasionally rent lights to out of town clients who hire me for audio.

The blanket 50K hour claim? Yeah... there's a spec that nobody talks about... and most people have likely never heard about... it's initial lumens. The output specs manufacturers give are based on initial lumens. Back when I first got obsessed with LEDs... about 9 years ago, I became friends with a brilliant guy who used to sell lights directly... remember Vidled? Well... we talked about this quite a bit. Everyone talks about LEDs running cool, but no... at the point of light, that diode is hot... really hot. That's why you see big heat-sinks and now, fans, on these lights. It's a battle against heat... because yes, as you just alluded to... 50K hours isn't that awesome of a number if the LED is HALF as bright at 8K hours. Back in 2007... the brightest LEDs then would lose around 20% of their brightness in the FIRST YEAR of use! See those old original Litepanels people are selling? Yeah... I'd never buy one. An Astra rated at 2x brighter is probably at least 3x brighter than the actual old panel.

To address your last question, any light claims comparing to HMI... are nuts IMO... I don't know why any company wants to go down that road. Your light better be freakin' amazing to make claims to HMI. I'm sure they will be, but so far the only LED lights I've worked with, that actually compare to HMI... are Aadyntech JAB lights. The Hurricane is supposed to compete with an 800w HMI... and it does very well, although it's slightly below in total output. BTW... the JAB is OVER FIVE GRAND... and if you see one in person, it makes the COB120t look like a complete toy by comparison. Jabs are freakin' SERIOUS lights.

That's not a dig on the COB120t... and any rational person would say, "why are you comparing a $5K light to a $600 light?!"... and my answer is, "Why are you?"

That's what drives me nuts with these 1.5K equivalent claims. Earlier in this thread the statement that LED is roughly 4-5x more efficient than tungsten... that's a good bit of commonsense to keep in mind. Any COB light you're interested in... take a look at the wattage, then figure you're getting 4-5x that in "tungsten equivalent". (at least for now... in October of 2016)

In my above post, linking the Arri calculator... I'm referencing the Arrilite... which is an open face light like the COB120t. The Arrilite has a good reflector enhancing it as a par... probably a better reflector than I've seen on the COB120t... but I don't think any cob-based light can make a lot of use of light reflected back, whereas a tungsten bulb is adding light into the bottom of the reflector as well (emitting light almost 360 vs. 180)... either way, the best horsepower comparison is with the Arrilite... and you can see for yourself, that even with a 375w bulb... the Arrilite is crushing the COB120t on that spec.

So why say it's a 1.5K equivalent? The 4-5x wattage is a good place to start.

I'm hoping that the fresnel attachment punches this up a lot. I'm 100% confident that at a spot setting, it absolutely will... but I'm really curious what it will do at the flood setting. Back when I was first trying to make an LED fresnel (again, around 2008-09)... the lens soaked up light as it shaped it. I was using genuine arri glass for this... and I finally lost interest as the output just wasn't there.

I bought some LED fresnels... and I can't wait to put one side-by-side with an arri 300w. All I can say is I HOPE... the new fresnels totally blow the 300w away, but I'm not kidding myself and expecting them to match an arri 650w... even though that's the claim... because it's not just Aputure doing this... it's almost everybody... and while so many people are clamoring about the "free lunch"... of replacing tungsten (or HMI) with low-priced "equivalents"... I just want to spread the word that no... they are not equivalents. The new lights are awesome yes... I'm buying them. I'll buy the daylight version of THIS one... the COB120d... but let's have a little more truth in advertising. That COB120d... at $700... ain't going to be a 1.5K HMI killer... why even say it's going to be an 800w HMI equivalent? Go look at a JAB Hurricane in person... it will freakin' blow your mind at the power... meanwhile the light head is the size of a watermelon... it's CHOCK FULL of the brightest LEDs... it's $5K... and even they are only comparing their light to an 800w HMI. (so there's one company not fudging numbers).

If the COB120d is even remotely close to a Joker 400... That will be a slam-dunk to anyone who knows lights... and they'll sell a million of 'em. That's what I'm hoping for... a 400w HMI equivalent would be so impressive that I don't know why they have to be ridiculous with 1.5K claims.
Hi MattinSTL, Have you done any comparisons yet with the Arri 300w? Been wanting to purchase the 120t and put it on a Chimera Pancake. Not sure if it would be bright enough to punch through it.
