Apple's Insomnia Contest

14. That's the number (so far) of entries I've watched that started out with a digital alarm clock going off. It seems that the time constraint imposed on the filmmakers seeped into their movie making. I started Eviction Day with a clock as well, so I'm just as guilty. However, I kindly chose to use an analog alarm clock with bells rather than the digital "beep-beep-beep" that we all know and loathe. I really wish people wouldn't use that annoying sound in movies. So far, the DVXuser entries I've watched have been head-and-shoulders above the rest of the other entries, but maybe I'll strike 3 minute gold soon enough...

am I missing something, or is the apple gallery convoluted and laggy? I don't see any info about how many people have viewed each movie, or what their ratings are. With so many entries lost in the database, I imagine the winners will be decided by whoever has the most facebook/myspace/youtube friends, rather than how many 'viewers' actually see the movie and like it.

That is exactly what is going to happen. It's a shame too because I'm sure a lot of great entries will go totally unnoticed.

Yeah, they still haven't put our movie up yet and we uploaded it in time and got the whole page that told us so.

Do they choose by average rating or by number of ratings?

If I vote my film a 4 and don't tell anyone about it, and nobody else rates it, would I be the winner? They didn't explain very well.

I'm pretty sure it's a combination of overall rating AND number of people rating. They stated it somewhere in the FAQ, but I'm too lazy to find it. Bottom line, I don't think that technique would work. ;)

still a dumb system because we are only getting our friends and family to vote, and they'll all give it a perfect score, so the winner is determined by whoever has the most friends/family who will sit through the crappy registration process

Poor Execution

Poor Execution

Yes the Apple gallery is a mess and yes it is a shame that we must campaigin to get our video viewed. Even the registration process is a jumble of hurdles.

But this is a lesson for us young filmmakers going into Hollywood. Marketing and Distribution is just part of the game. There are tons of great films that come out every year and never see the light of day. If you are going into movies, welcome to a world where a good movie doesn't matter as much as you think.

I didn't have time to upload a thumbnail for my movie. This was a fatal error on my part.

Check it out and let me know what you think:

i just wish there was a way (like youtube) to see what your ratings were like...or at least a way to know how many views you've been getting. I have no way of knowing if people are voting (other than those who have explicitly told me they voted).

At first I was able to see the # of votes/rating for each movie if I searched by school, but now they're not being shown. Any idea if we should be seeing each film's vote #/rating?

thanks mikequill; it was shot in Taos, New Mexico.

Austen: good point. Maybe apple will revamp their gallery or issue some sort of clarification...here's hoping

I just got back from hanging out at a friend's birthday party and 19/20 said they couldn't log in to rate it. It's looking like Apple spent as much time preparing for hosting these videos as we spent making our movies.

A local team Clearly cheated as they had blue skies while the state had four days of overcast skies. What crap.

Also there's a short out there with real footage from the inside of a helicopter, but I can't find it.
