Apple's Insomnia Contest

I entered, it was a lot of fun although hectic and exhausting! I'm anxious to see the entries.

I thought it was funny on the insomnia website "tips from John August" section, tip #6 is: Lighting matters more than resolution. A cheap camcorder with thoughtful lighting is better than a Red One at noon.

That's the biggest bunch of crap ever. No one with a cheap camcorder is gonna get a better image than a Red One user because Red One users are inherently better cinematographers + they have friggin manual focus and exposure and scene files for crying out loud!

They make this contest friendly to high school students and iMovie users because they want to showcase how simple and powerful macs with iLife can be, but gimme a break what are the odds the winner wasn't cutting on FCP or Avid and shooting with a 3ccd progressive cam?

We actually had Finalcut issues while rendering our 3 min short, and it took over 22 minutes on a dual cpu G5.

Yeah... we used Avid for my film, but suddenly remembered we needed to use a mac to be eligible. So that switcharoo took up the space between 3am and 7am for us.

Heres a still from mine. We shot the entire movie with my Nikon D80 so it's 2k resolution...(not that it matters when it gets compressed to under 15 mb). A totally fun project, I'll be doing Insomnia Fest next year for sure.

a 3 FPS movie... sweet.

Exactly! It was a lot of fun constantly giving the direction: "Ok, that's good, but now do it at 1/4th that speed." To their credit, all the actors did a great job with it and the movie turned out really fun. Some parts of it look like an undercranked silent film.

I will Deff look out for this one.

I ended up using "Don't Tempt Me", Dutch angle, match cut, and the name Robin Darjeeling...

Shot with a Sony Z1U but that doesn't really matter when it's compressed.

Just got an e-mail with some FAQs... Looking at the one below, you should be able to you-tube your video.

Q: Am I allowed to post my movie online somewhere to campaign for voting support?

A: Yes, you are allowed to post your movie on a website other than the Apple Insomnia Gallery in order to campaign for support for your movie. This includes places like YouTube, etc. However, we will only count ratings from individual friends, family and supporters that are recorded at the Apple Insomnia Gallery starting Oct. 19th, 2007.

Yeah, we were too! We hadn't planned on her being Russian, but she started talking in that accent in between takes, so we went back and reshot it with the russian accent lol.
